My Kimbers and other 1911s have always gone bang and had no glitches. Also, I've shot plenty of composite guns that have plenty of them.
I looked through the manual for my Super Match and it specifically says not to use flat nosed bullets or you will have jamming problems. So I guess I should have read the manual better.
Any gun can fail. That is why you should take good care of them, clean and oil every time you shoot.... you'll be more likely to catch a problem that way before your life depends on it.
Again, I agree on the bear. Carry bear pepper mace. 99% of the time if a bear is attacking, a gun is gonna be useless. Now if you stay with another person, and you both have large caliber guns, you may have a chance trying to stop an attack. Just make sure your partner is a good shot! Head Shots are your only hope!

I think the point Sean was making is that guns shouldn't come with 'bugs', they should go 'bang' from the get go.
This thread does amuse the hell out of me though as we keep referencing the 'bear'. It took me 37 years to see a bear outside of a zoo. It took my seven year old to point it out to me!We were hiking in Yosemite, and that bear was hauling ass the other way! 'S' does happen, but damn, some of ya'll need to quit being so paranoid and enjoy whats around you when you are in the great outdoors. I have this vision of some folks acting like they are on patrol when they are hiking for fun
being a stockton native myself, i have seen three in the last two years at nearby areas. twice in tahoe and once near redding. one was in the front yard when i was heading out at night. i decided to hang out a while longer.
but never have i looked one in the face or needed a firearm. you can get around most bear situations, but the humans scare the hell out of me.
i take a pistol camping more for recreational shooting than anything else.
i agree that most things should function off the bat, but everything in production has a hiccup once in a while. i have been lucky with mine since it has broke in. no more issues. i had three failure to feeds and one stovepipe during a 600 round break in. the stovepipe was with a magtech jhp. others where with a blazer brass that is notorious for problems.

I had a few encounters when I lived in MT. We had one that visited the garbage on the ranch pretty frequently. We also had lots of black bear in my back yard when I lived in the Rattlesnake wilderness area. The coolest was the wolves though. We had a pack of about 24 or so. You can read about them in one of Rick Bass's books "The Ninemile Wolves". There were 200 plus elk that wintered on the property and every so often we would see a chase/kill right in the pasture behind the horse pen..... about 400 yards off. It was like having the discovery channel in my back yard. Very cool.
The only attack that happened was to one of the children of a ranch hand. It was a lion that got him though. Luckily his uncle was nearby and was able to shoot and kill the lion. It took over 300 staples to put the little guy back together, but he wasn't permanently injured.
You can actually rent the house I lived in, or a room at the main house for a sweet get away in MT. I was there about a year and a half. It is the Bar One Ranch in Huson MT.

Love my Stoeger Cougar 8000 .40 . Compact and minimum recoil. In fact, no more recoil than my Ruger 9mm. The best part is you can get it for under $400! It's exactly like Berettas model only they're made in Turkey now, a couple hundred bucks cheaper, and a different name is stamped on it. Very accurate too and my wife loves it--not too big for her.
The Cougar is the first couple of pics, then I added a 2 more pics for fun.

There are 3 types of people in this world: Shepherds, Sheople, and Wolves. 95% are Sheople; 2.5% are Wolves; and 2.5% are Shepherds. Wolves feed on Sheople and Shepherds exist to protect Sheople from the Wolves. Wolves are more ferocious than ever and there are too many ignorant Sheople. Only Shepherds can protect the Sheople from the Wolves. We need more Shepherds. Which one are you?
I agree with the guys above. The bears I have encountered have been very shy and eluisive animals. They are rare, like the bad person however, when things go bad, they go bad fast, and you had better be prepared.
I have a Wilson custom .45 Auto (similar to the Kimber), and I must say, that I feel my light weight .45 Colt revolver is more dependable. Yes it has 1/2 the rounds, but most encounters are 1-3 shots anyway.
Noise, quickness, and knock down energy are your strengths when chosing a self defense weapon.
Everyone will have their favorite--just be sure you are comfortable and proficient with it.
