i thought about the G22 beacuse it is so inexpensive, but it didnt seem very collapseable. does it break-down well?
I don't think it breaks down at all, but it sure is cool. The browning is basically the same price, and it breaks down. Of course the it doesn't have the bas-ass factor

Something to help you with your purchase:

Re: Guns.

Go to Brownells, MidwayUSA, Cabela's, Sportsman's ... anywhere... and look at 10/22 options. There are no end of ways to rig this rifle. If you want to put together an accurate 22 that's a hoot to shoot, it's the 10/22.

When you buy a weapon, there is one part of it that's THE weapon, and all the other parts are potentially interchangeable (read: upgradeable) components. Legally, the controlled component of a gun is actually the receiver or frame. The other parts you can order online. For the 10/22, you can get upgraded action, trigger packs, barrels, optics, and stocks. The only thing you HAVE to get from a firearms dealer is the machined receiver that the action rides in and the trigger pack fits into. You can make this gun into WHATEVER YOU WANT!

Re: Guns.

It's comforting having the right equipment, being prepared for most anything. I like to get out to places where your totally reliant on your self. The mossburg 12g pump and the Rugar charger are essential! Ammo is expensive and practice is critical, I sleep well knowing I'm ready as can be. The extra weight is really not the issue.

why do you want to break it down? the bare bones G22 is $456.00 compared to the roughly $250 ruger 10/22 which is the standard when it comes to autoloading .22's and .22 rifles in general. the G22 pictured retails for $560. i also want a ruger charger .22 pistol. awesome piece. about 369 bones.

Ruger 22 Charger™*Rimfire Autoloading*Pistol (CHR22-10) Overview
wow... misread the price on that one! lol. i want ito be able to store it in my pack, so breakdown is almost a must. tahts why i've also been considering a pistol.

Re: Guns.

It all depends on what you want it to do. It's always a dick measuring contest anyway. There isn't anything in north america that can't be downed by a .30-06 or a .308 but you still see the hill-bobs bragging about their .338 or .45-470 that they can only shoot accurately on ONE pull of the trigger before their mind over-rides their masculinity because of the shock factor of the recoil.

If you want to get down to brass tacks there are varied purposes for any firearm:

A. Self-defense. Arguably the finest self-defense weapon ever made was a 12 gauge pump action shotgun. 90% of the time you don't even have to pull the trigger because your assailant wet him/herself when they heard you chamber the round. Granted, size can be an issue - thus the shorter barrel tactical models now available and quite popular. For the woods, you're likely not defending against something that has logical reasoning ability. In fact it's reasoning may be nothing more than a passing thought of, "can I eat that or is it going to eat me" which takes us to part B...

B. Backup guns or sidearms. Most experienced woodsmen will say .44 magnum. Quite popular as a backup gun especially in cougar country on a hunting trip. However, nearly just as effective in stopping power and with not as "thrill" to the trigger pull is the .357. Many .357's will also shoot .38 special which makes that my personal favorite pistol. You can shoot cheap for practice and keep some magnum loads handy for self-defense in the home or in the field. You have a huge choice of semi's and revolvers in just about every barrel length. Personally I like the revolver - if you can't hit it in six, having more shots is just screwing up your batting average - go back to the range and learn some basics. 6-8 shots is PLENTY!

C. Then you get into longer ranges. The whole entire point of a rifle is ballistic advantage. Whether you choose one with iron sights or telescopic sights, you have to practice at long range to be good at long range. There are tons of rifles on the market that boast sub-moa accuracy but if you can shoot that well buying the good stuff isn't going to get you any closer. .30 is perfectly suited for ANY animal in north america and preferred by snipers in nearly every combat situation since the first world war. Very few weapons offer the accuracy and the ability to reach out and touch some (one or thing) at distances beyond 500 yards. I'd skip the savage, a nice winchester model 70 or Remington 700 will more than adequately get the job done. If you like to spend money on awesome toys - check out H&S Precision and the tactical line of the Remingtons including the full on SWS. H&K is nothing to avoid. These are also phenomenal weapons, but at a much bigger price tag.

Now you guys know what I've been reading up on in my cruiser forum absence.

Hit a .8" group two weeks ago with my 700 in heavy wind at 100 yards. We'll go again in a couple weeks and see if I can't tighten it up even more. Then it's time to start dialing it in for extended range.

Don't go smaller than a .40. There's a reason cops up here had to go back down to a 9mm it's called over penetration. You can do all kinds of reading and find out that even an angry crack-head (read: malnourished drug addict) can require an entire clip of 9mm just to put them in the hospital. While the percussive damage from the initial point of contact from a .357 renders them obsolete. If it won't stop a crack head, it ain't gonna stop a grizzly.

Be safe. Get training. Know your weapon regardless of what you choose to carry.

thats ok for a gun that you are using for fun. but if you are considering something for personal protection, you dont want to have to ask the bad guy or bear to hang on while you assemble your gun.

This is what I use as my backpacking gun except in .45 Colt
It is Titanium and very light (when empty)
It is not a joy to shoot, but accurate and powerful

Taurus International Manufacturing Inc

How many rounds have you put through it. I've heard the Taurus' have a tendency to loosen up and be a general pain after you've put a lot of ammo through it. I really like the tracker and I'm still debating it in .357. Just can't afford that Smith & Wesson!

I've heard a lot of people like the Taurus these days, but a lot of the older gun guys I know don't trust the quality.

Re: Guns.

G L O C K. Asside from what you think is more accurate or has better knock down power or ammunition is cheaper, how about weapon will still fire if you drop it in the lake or better yet a puddle of mud?

A little "glock gouge" for those of you who care....

The Glock pistol is a truly amazing design. In the 1980s under the direction of Gaston Glock a team of handgun designers focused on creating a "bullet proof" system that was cheap to make, hardy under all conditions, and capable of being shot adequately with little training. The Model 17 was first introduced to the public in 1985 to mixed reviews. While the Glock G17 was many things, pretty it was not. There was polymer Glock parts instead of wood and heat treated metal with no high polish. For a while it seemed that the American public was not ready for this break-though product. Then some of the gunwriters began to beat the little Glock pistol up and torture it. Thousands of rounds were fired with no lubrication, they were buried, frozen, dropped from height on to concrete and generally abused. In the end it was a winner. Particularly as the 40 caliber round was adopted by Law enforcement and important groups like the FBI the Glock were quickly adopted for their robust nature and work under fire.

The above info was gathered from Glock Parts - Glock Accessories, Specifications and Disassembly. Just my 2 cents
