They come with extra pads you can put on top and below to make sure you don't puncture it. It would seem more sturdy to place it at the T intersection of rock rails and frame. Also, there are no sharp objects there as well.
I have been looking at getting one of these since i wouldn't trust leaving my vehicle on a hi-lift to change a spare.

Only thing stopping me is the high price.
