Trailer Brakes

At what axle weight does anyone recommend adding breaks to a trailer. I am planning on converting my half ton utility trailer to a camping/cargo trailer.
Looking at 3400lb torsion bar axle . Any thoughts?

Re: Trailer Brakes

I'm no expert by any means but...with the guidance I was given for my present ExPo trailer build up, I was advised to get an axle with them. The thinking/rational was that when used off-road, one can set the brake so that the trailer is helping with braking during a descent. I'm running a 3500 lb axle/springs and it didn't add that much to the cost to add the electric brakes.

Hope this helps some...

Re: Trailer Brakes

The cost of the conversion is well worth the stability you gain. IMO

Re: Trailer Brakes

What are the regulations in your area? Here in Alberta, trailer brakes are required if the trailer is over 2,000 lbs, but this varies from province to province.
