Maggiolina Extreme or Airland?

So, I have somewhat decided on either an extreme with 34.2" head room or a Airland with 36" head room in a small size. The price is $300.00 difference but the extreme is more heavy duty. For those of you who own this RTT, do you think the heavy duty build is worth the $300.00 extra?

Also been wondering about the same thing, the 2" diff. is alot when you only have 34-36" to begin with, but the extreme does have the small rack included and I guess it wouldn't hurt to have the extra ruggedness of the extreme especially if you plan on keeping it for a long time.

Re: Maggiolina Extreme or Airland?

The price is a killer..For instance lets look at cost per pound as an easy comparison.

My four wheel camper: Four Wheel Campers
$13.43 per pound to buy this camper at 800 lbs. Keep in mind it's all high priced aluminum (about 600 pounds worth), fridge, sink, cabinets, full size bed, heater, linoleum floor, screen door and a couple hundred more man hours to manufacturer, and a lot more hi tech
vs
Maggiolina Extreme
$19.99 per pound to buy, and you get a fiberglass clam shell, aluminum scissor lift with crank, ladder, mattress and bedding with pillows and I believe a sheet. Heck, they don't even throw in the cross bars to mount the thing. Thats another $500.00, then tax $270.00, then shipping $135.00 then crating $60.00 = $3164.00. WOW

With all that said, I will most likely be ordering one for the FJ and just swallow the cost as necessary cost for comfort while offroading.

Re: Maggiolina Extreme or Airland?

Jim, the only problem I see with the Extreme is the rack.
Out FJs have high roofs as is, and if you carry something on the rack of the Extreme, it will be up quite high.

By the way, you can buy that same rack setup for the Airlander too.
You would have to drill though.

The coolest thing so far I have seen for the Maggiolinas is the new changing rooms that will cover the door during entry/exit in bad weather, and also could be used for a shower/changing room/crapper.

They need bigger pictures to show these Italian women off

Re: Maggiolina Extreme or Airland?

Mine uses the Yakima crossbars, but the tent sits up very high.
There is a new rack coming on the market before long that will let the tent sit much lower, and it replaces the factory rack.

But that's a slide-in camper for a truck though isn't it? The Maggiolina is a Roof Top Tent which mounts to the roof of the FJ, good luck doing that with the 4 wheel camper.

Based on the manufacturing costs, not application, Maggiolino produces 10 times the amount of sleeping units than Four wheel camper produces in one year. Therefore their unit cost for production is a lot lower as is the wages paid to the employees in Italy. Being the only one in the world producing a "clam shell RTT", they have the market, and are profiting very well in the absence of competition. The Magg should cost $1600.00 to $1800.00, not the staggering $2699.00 they are asking.

If Magg sent up a factory warehouse in the states and cut out the middle man, their prices would be a lot more reasonable and palatable.
