Those of you with 7' garage door openings.

I have a 7' garage door opening; however I still have to install a garage door opener. Currently, when fully manually lifted, the clearance is about 6'6". Will a garage door opener fully lift the clearance closer to 7'?

The reason I ask is I am trying to gauge if I can install the OEM roof rack that needs 6'7" clearance. Thanks.

Re: Those of you with 7' garage door openings.

when i got mine back in march with the roof rack i hadn't even thought about the clearance till i got home. i had to park outside for the first week till i could get a garage door guy out to adjust it. the door pretty much clears the whole 7'. it does seem tight though. and i've been in a few parking garages in the city that boast 6'8" clearance i haven't rubbed yet but it is tight.

Turn the roof rack into a Mini-rack and cut +2"

Re: Those of you with 7' garage door openings.

I have what you might call a '7-foot' garage height - it is actually about 6'-10" from the floor to the bottom of the upper seal. When I first brought my FJ home, it would not clear the door, but I adjusted the opener to pull the door further up and I now get the full 6'10" clearance.

When you say that your clearance is 6'-6" when manually lifted, is this to the bottom of the garage door or to the top of the seal (attached to the house)? If you hold the garage door back in the track will it clearance to the maximum opening? If it does, then yes, you should be able to install an opener that will 'hold' the door up further in the tracks. Might be something to hire out - it is not that expensive, and garage door openers are a PIA, plus you can tell them what you need and make sure they get it right before you pay them!

If I hold the door up in the tracks, then the max clearance will be close to 6'10" as you mentioned. That is good to know that the door opener will be able to hold it up. Thanks.

Re: Those of you with 7' garage door openings.

Yep, sounds like the same setup. Should be no problem as long as the initial installation sets the opener at the right distance back. The original "up" location of my arm was about 3 to 4" from hitting the unit, now it is less than 1", so if they had installed it any further forward, I would have been SOL without moving all the brackets - anything can be fixed with enough work!

Air down at night to get it in there!

There's no problem with clearance into a 7' high opening. Just make sure that your opener is adjusted to pull the door past the weatherstripping that's attached to the header of your garage door opening. In fact I measured and I a 3" lift on the FJ will still fit with 33" tires on.

This means you should try to cut your radio antenna down to fit your new roof rack height. :-)

What I discovered was that our FJ antenna is the same height as your roof rack. I dont see this in my manual. Regardless, this is good because my wife is very forgetful. She is horrible with numbers. Now I tell my wife she can get into anything as long the antenna clears the limit.
