Garmin GPS on toyota.com website

Hey all,

Out of curiosity....

I was considering installing a GPS system in the FJ. (No, not the Toyota $3000 CDN ridiculously priced one). But if you go to the U.S. Toyota site ->FJ Cruiser ->Accessories, there's a photo of a Garmin GPS system mounted in or simply placed on the driver's side dashboard box thingy.

Anyone know if it's actually hard mounted in the dashboard box?

Or did the marketing jerkies just place it in the photo like that to make it look like it was hard mounted? (I know, I know, before you start flaming me "why would you want to hard mount a portable GPS system, in case you ever wanted to take it with you...").

Although it doesn't appear on the CDN Toyota website, there are lots of GPS Systems available from Future Shop, Best Buy, etc...

I was just curious. Seems like a reasonably priced alternative to the $3000 Toyota Nav system. (albeit with a smaller screen...)

Pete

If you buy a Garmin GPS, don't register it with Garmin until after they announce the version 9 maps so you'll get a free upgrade.

They usually release the new maps in the April-June time frame and then ship it in August-October, but as long as you register after the release date, you'll get it free during the ship.

Here's the place where you find the release dates & ship dates
Garmin: Map Updates

v9 should be soon.

Re: Garmin GPS on toyota.com website

Thanks Rover for the link.

(Yup, I should have searched first!)

So it is a real, dashboard box mounted unit. Interesting....

Thanks again all.
