Since i havn't been to the states since, oh about the age of 16, I've let my passport expire and no longer have one. I've been reading a bunch of stuff online but certain sites are contradicting each other. do you now need (as of jan 31st 2008) a passport to drive across the border? or is it just for Air and sea travel? Is a combo of Drivers liscence and Birth certificate enough? or will i absolutely need a passport?
Also, I couldn't find the details on what i can bring across the border in the way of alcohol. I know i can bring 2 cartons of cigarettes across, but that's about all i know. Is it something along the lines of 2 cases of beer? or can you bring a flat (24 cans)?not sure, and am scratching my head about it.

I'm coming to Canada in a few months for a meeting and I was instructed to secrue a passport. Additionally, I live near the Mexican border, and it is now being widely circulated that a passport is required to get BACK into the USA from Mexico. The news carriers are reporting that the border guards have some leniency to offer as many people will not be aware of the new regulations.
If I were you I'd get a passport. It is a bit of an inconvenience with all the paperwork that you have to do but you know it'll get you into the U.S. for sure and it is good for 5 years.
yah i prolly will just to be safe. who knows, with the prior on my record from 7 years ago they may send me home either way. but i've read that they will only look up that kind of info if you give them just cause or are all shifty n stuff. that and they have to take you inside and do more reserch or something into your past. no biggie, should be fine.
and i know the question will come about what the charge was, got a year of probation for beating the crap out of a guy that decided it would be fun to stalk my GF at the time. judge asked me if i assaulted the guy, i said yes, he asked why i told him, he said that i shouldn't even be getting charged but to learn me a lesson on letting police handle it he was giving me a year of probation. Even my proby said i shouldn't of had that on my record. oh well.

Last time I checked Goverment of Canada site or was it Border Control, do not remember it stays: "No Passport - No Go". Be carefull on this. YOu might be good without a passport, but you'd need to bring Citezenship card with you.
to my knowledge, after january 08 they were making you show passports to cross border... we went to canada for vacation in october, and they left us go with only id and birth cert., but that is cuz we were traveling by land... they even told us about the new upcoming law that started in january 08... good luck, i would get the passport...
Documents for Travel to the United States
Land
As of January 31, 2008, the United States is requiring all travellers to present documents to enter the U.S. These documents must be one of the following:
- A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's licence, PLUS a birth certificate or citizenship card; or
- A valid passport; or
- A NEXUS or a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card; or
- An enhanced driver's licence; or
- A Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) card; or
- For those 18 and under, only a birth certificate.
Yep -- you have it right. The need for an even more secure form of ID is 18 months out from January 31, 2008. It is still in debate in 18 months if that will be a passport or a more secure version of a drivers license.
I crossed from Windsor to Detroit to catch a flight to Las Vegas for new years and noticed they ask a few more questions than they did a year ago:
a) They now ask if you have even been finger printed.
b) They ask if you have ever been refused entry to the US.
c) They ask if you have ever been convicted of a crime.
d) They ask of you have more than $10,000 in cash.

Just don't try BSing the border guard when you cross. Canada and the US now share computerized information systems.
At the Sarnia crossing Canadian border guards have refused Americans entry in to Canada for old offenses -- ones like DUI when they were much younger. If you were convicted the US border guards will have access to that information.
