Thumbs up Georgetown Ice Racing - 2013

When?
The first on-ice event will be their annual kickoff 'Fun Day for Practice' on Friday, December 28th, 2012. The first actual races will be Saturday and Sunday of that weekend (will miss this one, cause we'll be in TX). Here's the schedule.

Where?
On the frozen surface of the Georgetown Reservoir, here.

Costs?
1. Tech Inspection
This is a required, once-per-year fee. It's $5 for Street division (which is what most of us here are).
You can contact them to arrange for a pre-season tech inspection, or wait in line like we did on race day.
2. Race Entry fees
Each race you enter is $20 (there are multiple races per day, and if you really want to, you can enter as many as you like...and a single vehicle can be entered in more than one race - if you let your friend or spouse or whomever use your rig in a race too). Here's the complete rules page, including entry fees, vehicle requirements, etc.

Memories?
Here are links to my pages of photos and videos from the three times that we went out for the races in 2011 (we missed every race date for the 2012 season due to the whole repair fiasco)...
January 16th, 2011 (now including videos)
February 20th, 2011 (the day we met FJCarlos)
February 27th, 2011 (Championship weekend)

Here are a couple photos...

This one shows two vehicles 'on the line' awaiting the go signal to begin racing...

The blue Bronco-looking thing way back on the left and the white car in the middle-background were racing as I took this shot...

Plans?
I can't say for sure what our racing schedule will be yet, but we'll get out there at least a couple times.
So, who's thinking about getting out there with us this season?

Re: Georgetown Ice Racing - 2013

I have been wanting to do this for the last three years. Hopefully I will be able to fit it into my schedule at least once this winter.

Hopefully, I should be able to make the full season of the Bare Rubber race this year. That is the plan anyway

Re: Georgetown Ice Racing - 2013

I'm hopeful to be there this year, just not in the FJ. However having studs in the snows put me into needing a helmet if I recall correctly? Or where do they draw the helmet/no helmet line?

THIS LOOKS AWESOME! I tried to sign up last year, but it really didn't work out.

Unfortunately we'll all be dead before december 28th... apocalypse and all that.

Re: Georgetown Ice Racing - 2013

Hmmm...I know I have Christmas week off and I think my wife does too. Depending on how good the snow is we might like to go and give it a try in the FJ. If there is a good size fresh powder dump then we will be out on the slopes. But since we rarely get really good quality dumps that time of year I think the ice racing will win out.

How many people show up for something like this?

After reading the rules am I thinking right that I can't run any normal snow tires in the street class? I think it will be very slippery on Goodyear Duratracks.

I know what you mean....I recall going past Georgetown many years, wishing I could get in on that, cause it looked like so much fun (and because I always loved getting out on the ice back in MN).

Hopefully you can make it out sometime. If you do, let us know so we can try to get together.

Nice! Wish I could, but it's just not practical. Vacation, NFL, ice racing....so many options. It'll be cool to see you out there again, Carlos.

The rules and the questions pages appear to leave it a bit vague. In one context, it sounds like you're not required to have a helmet, and depending on what they mean by 'soft rubber compound', in another place it sounds like you'd be forced into the helmet category, regardless of whether you put studs in them or not if they are officially classified as 'winter tires'. I suggest that you send them a message to make sure before driving out there; let them know the brand and model of your tires, etc, and find out where it places you in the 'classes'.

Oh ya....there's that.

Personally, I plan on being resurrected on the morning after by His Noodliness, the Flying Spaghetti Monster. If you want to live, latch onto one of His meatballs and hold on....it's gonna be a wild and crazy ride.

Cool, man. I like the sound track.
Never heard of Tinie Tempah before (I don't get out much).

Well, they normally have a limit of 200 race participants/drivers per weekend/event, but there can be many times that out there on any given race day with all of the friends, family members and other spectators.

As discussed above, I know exactly what you mean. They say both 1. that street legal tires place you in the street stock, bare rubber category, and 2. that soft rubber compounds (which is what most common street-legal snow tires are made of) place you in the pro street category.

Hopefully we can get some clarity so that everyone knows what the deal is.

If one of you guys checks in with them about it first, please let the rest of us know.

Re: Georgetown Ice Racing - 2013

Taken from the official website
Our Gang Ice Racing ? Georgetown, Colorado

Rookie Race Information
We’ve had a lot of interest in the Rookie Race, so here is more information for you:

The Rookie Race is a new event for our inexperienced bare rubber drivers to race against each other. Basically there are two requirements you must meet to register to compete in the Rookie Race:

#1 – You must have registered and competed in the Street Bare Rubber or Pro Street Bare Rubber class the same day you want to enter the Rookie Race.

#2 – You cannot have won any 1st-5th place awards or Championships with Our Gang in the last 3 years (2010, 2011, 2012). If your name is on this list, you cannot enter the Rookie Race (click to see list). Also, if you win an award in 2013, it will not disqualify you from Rookie Races until 2014.

Any qualified driver can register for the Rookie Race for free. Participants will be paired up and we will run race heats until we have a winner. The winner of the race will take home a prize. Points will also be awarded each Rookie Race like so:
1st Place: 6 points
2nd Place: 5 points
3rd Place: 4 points
4th Place: 3 points
5th Place: 2 points
All other race participants: 1 point

The tentative schedule for Rookie Races are Dec 30, Jan 27, Feb 10, Mar 3
So, there are 4 point earning Rookie Race opportunities. The top point earner (point tie breakers are in effect) at the end of the season will be awarded Rookie of the Year at our award banquet.

Remember: Our veteran ice racers who are ineligible to enter the Rookie Race can stick around for practice track if they want more seat time!

Re: Georgetown Ice Racing - 2013

I suppose there are some things I can be happy to be disqualified for (got 4th at our first race in 11), even though I'd really like to join in. The points could certainly help a great deal, and sort of evens it out for the noobs (which I still consider myself, especially since I missed last season altogether).

You going for it, Carlos?
