Re: Get your HAM License!!

At one time I was KB5WIK, but let that expire. I was one of the Tech Plus guys (no code), and really enjoyed at first, but it was becoming a real pain with all the trash on the waves. I was getting sick of folks keying up just to interrupt a conversation, and other idiotic things along those lines.

Re: Get your HAM License!!

Due to lack of interest & other commitments, I won't be able to go over a class at the meetup this weekend. Hopefully we can in the future. I will be around & maybe say a few words about HAM, but no training this time. Maybe soon though

Just be aware of the fat that the HRO outlet in Denver is staffed by.....some, welll..."crusty" old guys, who probably never use anything other than CW.

I got out of training at the head office early one day, so went to HRO in Denver. I was treated very well by the staff.

I explained that I will be testing next weekend and wanted to get some stuff so I'd be ready to start. The man showed me several HT's, explained the features, etc. He actually steered me a bit to the lower end. I ended up with a Yaesu FT-60R, 2m/70cm. This will get me started, and allow me to grow a bit. Then down the road I can get a nice mobile, HF etc as I see what direction I go. It was also the lowest cost of those he showed me.

He saw what I was driving and mentioned an antenna mount that goes on the rear door hinge. I said Bandi and ya that was what he meant. Said I'd have to drill it out a bit for the antenna I bought. The man knew his stuff. So also got a 1/2 wave antenna and cable, adapters and a cigarette plug charger.

I am very happy with my visit there.

I'll post my call sign in a bit when I pass the test. Then time to start working on the General Class.

Thanks to all for your support.

Sounds like you had a great experience. Most of my visits to various HRO's have been just like that. You'll like that radio as well. Great HT.

Good luck on the exam.

Again, I'm testing this Saturday. So still a newby. I started with a Yaesu 2m/70cm HT. But thinking down the road I want to get my general class and get into HF. I looked at the 857, nice stuff there. But I wouldn't use the HF as a moble rig to say. So am thinking more that I would get a nice base station that I could run off a car battery at a camp site. Maybe a nice antenna that would fit on the roof rack and set up on site?

But like the guy that sold me my radio last week told me...start basic and get what you really want down the road when you've learned. But for not much more $ between the two radios you mentioned, well dunno.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

Re: Get your HAM License!!

Took my exam this morning. Did great on it! Now to wait for my name and number to appear on the database.

I barely made it to the exam in Durango... I got called in to work at 3:30 this morning. Finished at 8:20 and hauled up to Durango. I was so tired.

Thanks to all of you for your support!
