Frustrating Dealer Order

I sold my first FJ, and now I want to buy another. I went back to my local dealership, Southcoast Tojo in Costa Mesa, CA to order exactly what I wanted. Simple enough, right? WRONG. I want a base model (stripper) with only the convenience package. They will not even take the order. Seems like all FJ's come loaded, or at least with upgrade package 1. This is BS, anybody else have this happen?

Why did you bail on the first one if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Frustrating Dealer Order

My understanding is that dealers cannot take orders, they are given allotments over which they have little control..... Many have complained of never getting their "ordered" FJ's or getting them with the wrong options.... I believe that is for this very reason....

I would call around and find the vehicle you are looking for..... I hear the base models are mythic though.....good luck trying to find one..... You are in one of the best places in the country in my opinion as far as inventory is concerned though. In LA and OC county there are 30 to 40 dealers..... I found 10 of the exact model / color / etc. I was looking for when I was shopping a month ago..... hope this helps....

Re: Frustrating Dealer Order

Production orders are set up for particular geographic distribution regions long before the vehicles are built. Maybe the dealers in your region are probably not going to receive a "base" FJ and don't want a mad, impatient customer.

We have received two "base" models (without even CQ) in the FJs lifespan (since February) and we sold around 4750 new Toyotas last year. I was able to procure a 2WD for one customer (very rare) and it took from June to October to receive it.

Dealers do have some control over what they receive, but only inside the "cookie cutter" build patterns offered by the factory, during a production period.

I would guess that they have been burned by customers that put down refundable deposits at 2 or more dealerships and then didn't take the "special ordered" vehicles when they came in.

Mine old one was Voodoo and loaded. I want a black one and paint the roof black, no rack, no rails. I want to install the DO bumper and use it for a work truck. I like that look. I also could not stand the gauge cluster and took mine off, but then there was a big hole in the dash. I was not a big fan of the FJammer, mine sucked...the Sat radio sounded really, really bad. So, I want to install my own setup and of course not pay for the stocker. Same for the alloy's, gimmie the black steelies. I'm gonna rip out the seats and install some Beards and proceed to beat the snot out of it! Maybe a vintage wheel to complete the look (air bags, schmair bags, safety is way overrated, this ain't no Volvo, it's a truck!) Sorry to rant, but I want it my way!

Welcome back Batman. I was wondering what you finally did about the hole in your dash. Didn't you also paint your dash and door panels? It is good to see that you are looking for another one. I hope you can find one the way you want it.

I regret being FJ'less, but I have a vision of a new one. I bought the new Audi RS4 and it's serving a purpose, but it's tough to make a Home Depot run the the RS...

Just spoke to Longo Tojo (they're huge) and they said they would order my truck with a $500 deposit. Said, maybe within three months. So, it is officially on order. Counting down the days...

Re: Frustrating Dealer Order

Way to go, Batman! You found a dealer who will order an FJ the way you want it. For the mods you want to do a base model with only the convenience package is the smart way to do it.

Who'd you speak to at Longo? They're supposedly the biggest car dealership in the world.

I've been trying to get a Base 4x4 MT, or even with only CQ, but have been going through hell as well. I'm ready to just order one, but am having a hard time with that too.
