AZ Buying help. Totally confused

I'm finally ready to buy an FJ. I really don't like the idea of paying sales tax so I've been lurking around ebay, craigslist, and autotrader.com trying to find a used one in the area to purchase....

Now here's where the confusion kicks in.
Do I pay sales tax when I buy a car through a private seller? It seems like when I google that every single website says, yes, you pay sales tax when you register it. But every single person in Arizona I've talked to who's bought a used vehicle says nope..Not to mention I didn't pay sales tax when I bought my last used car. Now maybe this only applies if you buy a used car from a dealer?

How about if I buy a used FJ from private seller in another state? I just read a thread where someone from AZ shopped the used market in California and saved himself 2500 in sales tax. (This is probably the option I'm relying heavily upon as I can increase my chances of finding the FJ I want if I search nationwide instead of just AZ)

It seems I get conflicting answers everywhere I go.. Please help, I'm getting frustrated.

P.S. Whats the best place to shop online for used cars..not from dealers I guess since I'd have to pay tax? There aren't too many on craigslist and autotrader is full of inflated prices and dealers dealers dealers.

You will pay AZ sales tax, on the purchase price, when you reg the FJ.

Huh! Have I been living in a lead lined cave? Is this a new law? 2 years ago I bought a car from a client and didn't pay sales tax at reg.

You ripped off the state of AZ!!! I hope someone from the DMV is lurking on this site!!

It's just like if you win a car .... when you go reg the car you will be paying taxes on it.

Re: AZ Buying help. Totally confused

I bought mine used from an individual in California this past March. I thought I would have to pay sales tax when I registered it in AZ. I called the AZ DMV before I went to register it to ask that very question. She asked if I bought it from a private seller and I said yes.

She said no sales tax.

Keep in mind that the person I spoke with was probably at some call center, not the person I actually registered with down at the DMV. When I went to the window, I handed them my title and that was it. No sales tax, just the registration cost.

Oh, and on the where to purchase question. I looked all the places you did and just remained patient. I eventually found mine on autotraderonline. The ones on ebay seem to be overpriced, but if you call and sound serious, they all usually come down on the price. I was going to buy one in VA from a dealer for lower than the auction reserve price... he was ready to do the deal until I found the one in CA and called him back to wish him luck with the rest of the auction.
