GA FJ Buying questions

Alright guys it is finally coming time to buy my new FJ Cruiser (within the next 4-6mos). I live in Warner Robins GA and I am looking for a good (ideally honest but will settle for not going to screw me without lube) dealer either in Middle GA or south ATL. Hell I would even drive to Savannah for the right deal.

Here is what I want a
2008 Brick FJ Cruiser
4X4 (will settle for 4x2)
Auto transmission (must have for wife)
Upgrade package 1 (not a must have but prefered)
Convience Package
Roof Rack

The problem I am finding is three main things;
1) Every Brick FJ I see is loaded down with absurd
extras (ie 32,000 sticker price) I dont need or want step
bars or mats or toyoguard or skid plate or those DAMN
BBS rims that all of them seem to have.
2) Dealers don't seem to know diddly about the FJ. My
local dealer couldn't give me a decent explanation
between Convience pack 1 and convience pack 2.
3) I don't want to pay more than 28,500

Any help would be greatly welcomed.

Re: GA FJ Buying questions

PM'd you the guy who I worked with at ... Cobb County Toyota.

Got a sweet deal in November on an '07, I know you aren't looking for '07, but they were straight up with me, no hassle, no pressure, semi-knowledgeable about the vehicle. I did a ton of research before deciding on buying it there. I have some bad experience with some of the other Toyota dealerships around town.

I am loving the FJ

Re: GA FJ Buying questions

Dude now that mine is bought I can share this story with you. I just bought an 08 from a dealer in my home in Florida. Before I bought it I called up a buddy who use to sell cars (Mazdas) and told him I was looking at the FJ and did he know anyone who sold Toyotas. I did not care where just wanted to probe to find out what a fair deal was, like you said dealer makes a few I don't get hosed. He called a buddy up in Conn. who was a sales manager for a Toyota dealership and here is what he told me. He said first if you find it hard to find the invoice amount take the MSRP and take off 9 percent. Sure enough he was right I found another Florida dealer who listed invoice and sure enough sometime you had to take off 8 percent sometime 9 but you were only a couple hundred off. Then he said a fair deal is invoice plus 2 or 3 hundred.

Now with that said I had the dealer find me the color I wanted with everything but the BBS wheels you mentioned, no metal skid plate, or that option with the VIN number etched on the window. I did however get the roof rack, the step up bars, and the passenger arm rest (all non package options.) Then it came with the convience package and option 2. The FJ MSRPed just under 31 and invoice I think like just under 28 somwhere in the 27 and something range. They came in at MSRP minus what they thought my trade was worth 3,500 (however there nice blackbook link can me a range 4,100 to like 5,100 so I thought it was worth 4,500.) I said it was an insult and said here is where I think you should be the MSRP minus 9 percent plus 300 for them minus my trade at 4,500. I told them the story of how I got there and told them even if I am off I am not off by thousands.

OK so they come back now only a few hundred off my number but of course they play the sales games now they say they are give me like 6,500 for my car which I told them they are not they are just combining the discount off MSRP with the trade value of my car. Once I did the math they were gving me like 3,600 and change for my car. So I thought about it and told them what I lied and didn't and said if they took 200 more off the number they had a car deal. Of course the manager comes back gives me the well I can't do it but if the GM says so then we have a deal and sure enough we did.

The onyl thing I could have really done was instead of ask for 200 more off was 400 because that would have taken the trade value to 4000 and we would have been splitting the middle between my 4,500 and their 3,500. All in all not a bad experience they are always going to try and get you to go for that MSRP minus trade number so as long as it doesn't take them more than two times to get to your number then I think you were fair and they were fair to you. By the time the day was done and I added sales tax and title and I also opted to increase the warranty to 60,00 plus that includes oil changes and tire allignments which normally I would not do I think 100,000 is a waist but 32,000 is sort of low and the big thing was I did not take the first amount so they brought that down to like 800 and change so I said what the heck. I walked out with it for 27, and like 500 or something mid 27s basically. All depends if you are putting a trade down or not but hopefully that helps you and anyone else and I do not make the dealer upset if they see this. But I think one thing they wouldn't mind me saying is you have to let them make something because one thing my buddy told me was back in his day if you beat them up too bad you got nothing later. if you brought your car in with something that could be warranty but it was their call if they were going to call it that you did not get it the sales man made sure of it. Just my two pennies.

Re: GA FJ Buying questions

My wife and I hunted Carmax for our FJ. It took quite a few months of searching for the exact color and options but we did it and saved like 6-7k on it. We have no complaints with our FJ it was originally bought in November of 2006 and when we bought it, it had only 7k miles on it. We are very happy with the money we saved on the whole deal

Re: GA FJ Buying questions

I dealt with the internet sales department at Sandy Springs Toyota. I got my FJ back in July and got it for under Edmund's invoice by like $900. Just go to a dealer and know what you want and be prepared to stick it out until you get the deal you want. The majority of my wait was caused by the a/c shorting out and them evacuating the building, lol.
