After many years living overseas, I'm finally coming home. I live in Jacksonville in Southern Oregon, but am flying into San Francisco in July. I want to pick up an 08 4x4 with the convenience package and upgrade package #2. Invoice seems to be around $26K. Reading around the forums and the net, I've realized that it may be hard to get a good deal in the Pacific Northwest so I was thinking about buying it in the Bay Area and heading on up to Oregon. Here are my questions:
How should I go about getting the ball rolling on this before I get to California? And if I buy it in California, but I'm a resident of Oregon and want to register it in Oregon, am I exempt from the California sales tax? Is $26K a reasonable price to shoot for? Any and all input is much appreciated. Can't wait to get back.
I live in Alaska and have bought 2 Toyotas, an FJ and a Taco in the past year. One was in WA and the other was in Sacramento. You can have the dealer issue a temporary trip permit so that you can drive "directly" out of state. This will also help you avoid paying high CA sales tax. The dealership might try to tell you it's not possible to do or that Toyota doesn't allow it ( I had 2 dealers in CA tell me that), but it's a bunch of Sh1te. If one dealer won't help you, find another who will. The best bet is to contact the dealership's internet sales manager directly, tell them what you want and they can have it ready to go when you get there.

In Tennesse, you just have to sign an affadavit stating that it will be removed from the state within 3 days and fill in the blank as far as where you reside to avoid paying sales tax for a state you don't live in (in addition to the one you do).
I'm nearly sure most other states have the same or a similar arrangement.

Longo Toyota claims that you need to get a permit from the state which takes 3-4 weeks in order to drive out of California. Plus they say that you need to pay California (8+%!!!!!) sales tax, and you have to pay in cash (not even a cashier's check... but cash), and pay full MSRP.
They sure move a lot of cars at Longo, but I've never dealt with a bigger bunch of a-holes in my whole life. Hopefully you can find a California dealer that is reasonable. Another one tried to nail me with sales tax even though I was having the truck shipped to me. It was never even touching the road in California and they tried to tack on sales tax.
I would shop around in Medford and the surrounding area, even up in Eugene or Salem before I bought from a California dealer. Just get a price quote from Cali and get one of the Oregon dealerships to match. If you must buy in California just make sure you get everything in writing and run it by the gang here first to make sure they aren't misquoting their state laws (which happens a lot I've found).
I'd like to pick it up in Medford, or even a little further north. Buying locally is important to me. I'll give them first crack at it, they just don't seem to want to deal as much as the California dealers. I know exactly what I want, and I'll send the info to the fleet managers and internet sales managers at all the Oregon dealers and to the 30 or so Bay area dealers, get the best deal, and see if the Oregon dealers can match it. From all the information I've gathered, it's no problem to drive it out of state and register it in Oregon without paying sales tax. So if a dealer tells me that it's impossible, he's lost my business. Looking around at the dealers' websites (the ones that actually show the inventory) there seems to be a lot of FJ's on the lots.
Good idea Clinton. Also remember that California sometimes has rebates going that aren't going elswhere. I know right now there is one running through April 31st. There are some 2007's still sitting on lots in a few dealerships.
I know there is a really cool dealer that hangs around on this site and he is up in Washington. He would definitely be worth talking to. He doesn't use this board to sell vehicles or anything, but he will give you info from the dealer's side of things and may be able to find you the best deal.
It seems that with things being so tight economically that dealers would hop on any leads they get, but to me it almost felt like the California dealers weren't interested in dealing with me because it would require a little more work on their part. It is amazing how many guys will completely forego a sale rather than put in an extra ten minutes on the process and find out what the laws and such are. Best of luck no matter what you do. I am sure you will love your new truck!
And one thing I forgot to add.... I love Jacksonville! My favorite actor ever lives there. His name is Bruce Campbell. I have read his books as well. The guy is a national treasure.
My mom lived in Ashland for a long time and was involved with the film festival there and got to meet Bruce and watch one of his movies with him. She grew up in Klamath Falls, but followed us out to Utah about a year ago. She really misses Southern Oregon, and I miss going there on vacation.
I've negotiated a great deal on a Trail Teams in the Bay Area but this is what the dealer has told me:
"I have investigated the relocation of your FJ from here to Oregon and we do have to have a
professional driver or service take the vehicle across the border.
It seems like the simplest way to proceed is for me to get you some shipping quotes to get the vehicle up to Oregon for you. I can provide the prices to you and we can send the contracts to you to be completed."
Have you guys ever heard about anything like this? Why couldn't I drive a brand new vehicle that I have purchased with temporary tags on it? I've done some research and haven't come up with anything. Any help is much appreciated.
Just sounds like another way to get more money from you. Tell them you're the professional service and drive it home.
