The good news: I just put my name on the list for a 2010 sandstone FJ with automatic transmission and the tow package.
The bad news: we haven't talked price yet.
Assuming that the dealer now knows that I want the vehicle (obviously), I am wondering about how much I can expect him to try to charge me....and roughly what I should eventually end up paying...
I held off on putting a deposit down for that reason. I'm hoping that if I wait into October, I will be able to negotiate some more, but I am really set on the TT and don't know how much negotiating will get me on a vehicle that will be limited.
In the early days demand for the new FJ Cruiser was high, dealer supply was limited, so the price dealer's could command was tops (great dealer margin). No dealer discounting was required to move the inventory.
As the economy started to turn down, supply increased and dealers tried to move inventory, but dealer margins suffered as result. Consumers were rethinking big ticket item purchases and demand decreased.
This year Toyota stopped production early and supply decreased. Consumer demand wasn't great (until the recent clunker program), but the dealers seemed to eek out a better margin because they didn't have a large inventory to turn over.
The $64,000 question will be the supply and demand for the 2010 model. Will Toyota limit production in order to realize suggested retail pricing (dealer margin)? Or will dealers want more inventory to attract consumers into the showroom. Personally I think the majority of consumers can wait out the price of big ticket items and wait for dealer incentive to lower pricing. Toyota posted their first financial loss ever this year. Will they reduce work force and lower production, or be willing to push volume to remain on top of the automotive manufacturers?
If I were a buyer this year, I would wait for price incentives.

Great Post the Reason Toyo was on Top was they are a Pull System. they Never make more than they can sell, in fact they keep production numbers very tight.
Unlike the big 2 1/2 they are a push system they carpet bomb the public with truck or car after truck soaking the market. Toyo adjust's production every year based on sales.
My GF in Toronto worked for toyo, as a QE she knows all that stuff.

THANK YOU
Kansas Law Dog hit it on the nail! The only thing I would add to this is "Options" If your going to buy a 010 get all the goodies you want. It can cost way to much later to add let's say a rear locker or leather seats. Some times you can get them to come down on price if they have a '09 in stock fully loaded and you act like you want it because of the color and a few of the options just not all of them you care not to pay for. I don't follow the market and have no idea of what's in stock at dealerships so my stratedgy may not work.

Good comments, all... One of the reasons I'm on the list for a 2010, is that basically there are no 2009 FJs to be found. I did locate one about 150 miles away...but they wanted well over MSRP...and it had stuff I didn't need. There is actually a well-used 2008 here in town for sale at a dealer, but they're asking about $28K for it...about what it should have cost brand new. So there will apparently be no 'end of year' clearance prices for this particular vehicle..
Also- I started seeing reports that the 2010 will have a slightly more efficient engine, and a tighter turning radius..so just decided to wait and order the exact vehicle I wanted.. (If I can figure out how to pay for it).

It can actually you a lot more to get certain options than if you were to buy them aftermarket, because you usually can't buy just the options you want.
In my experience, these trucks are either pretty loaded, or totally stripped. Most are pretty loaded. If I want a locker, you have to buy a loaded truck for $5-6k, because very few come with just the locker. Is the locker worth 5-6k?

While this may be true, there is more room to negotiate on one that's loaded compared to one that's just a base model. At least this was the case for me. Of all the FJs I've looked at, I've never seen one without a rear diff lock. I'm not doubting that some may exist, but that's basic in the truest meaning of the word. It's also true that when a new model year first comes out it will be more difficult to get a better price, but who knows what incentives Toyota may come out with. Good luck in your search!
