Demello rear bumper tested by drunk driver *UPDATED*

Totaled the mid 80's Toyota van that rear ended us.
Slight crumple on drivers side from bumper pinching body.
Broken drivers seat.
Cracked/ broken rear axle.

Ok, first...I'll get a few pics up when I can. For now, I'm pretty beat.

So stopping at a stop light, I check my rear view (riding a motorcycle gets you into visual scanning all the time) and see the van approaching. I push my wife back into her seat (bent over looking in purse) and look for an out...left turn lane open but that's where he'd go so i'm off brakes and start to roll right. I glance again (all of this in about a second so) an i see his face and hear the brakes come on (way to late.)
We get hit in driver side corner and see asphalt for a second and get turned 45 degrees from start, just short of car in front of us. His van skids facing the correct way on other side of road.

Blankly, he gets it in gears and drives away...left front wheel folded.

F THAT!!

I ask my wife if she's ok and tell her to call 911. I follow him and notice his license plate (old CA blue type) has been painted over numbers so we can't read numbers. My wife was on top of it "we've just been rear ended and the car has left, I need to to take these numbers down now!"
We follow him as he turns into a shopping center..I start honking and hang back, but follow. People walking out of store, girl scout troop..I stop.

He heads out of lot to main street again, down the street his van stops going forward, I am PISSED, but find i'm hurtin a bit and stay in FJ but pull in front of his van. His face totally blank still.. he starts to pull his passenger over to drivers side, whom is pinned in crushed front of early 80s toyota van, slumped over. He gets back in and goes around me. I stay to block traffic the whole time the wife calling street and direction to cops.
This is the bad move...I pull around him, FJ grinding and making noises (I haven't been out to see damage) I about hit him in front and force him onto side road...he runs over curb, we fall farther back so he slows but continues.

"they are one turn behind us" wife confirms, "take it easy".

The wheel goes and he hit curb and dies on front curb of poor old lady watching. The driver pulls passenger over (head bleeding) and sits down on lawn. Police arrive.

FUN!

My spare smashed in his entire window, front smashed in on right side. His passenger door "lambo'ed". he hit the left side rear Demello brick bumper. The Acro light is toasted, rear quarter panel showing a 4" patch of fresh metal as all paint has come off. The bumper is slightly twisted, as is the frame. there is a gap in front under front bumper as well. It got dropped off today but i'll have some photos taken. I'm not sure how bad it is, but there was a bit of wobbin' and shakin. I drove it to ER (wife is preggo) and back home which was a lively event. The steering wheel is turned to the right.

Checked blog today, Felony arrest..DUI, hit and run, etc..

Be safe!

Yikes. Sav, glad you're ok. Hit and run.. &@$#. I just recently was a witness to a hit and run. I was able to take down his number and called the police. 2 cars were hit and they were grateful for the license number. Some people have no conscience.

Damm nice work not letting him get away with it, hope wife and baby are ok.
Should have got out and kicked him in the head a few times before the cops showed up, that ass could have killed someone.

Wow, glad you ok but I'll guess you and your wife will be sore tomorrow. I'm sure it doesn't need to be said but follow up with MD, just in case.

I'll also guess that this wasn't this guys first encounter with the criminal court system...

It is so sad that in our county, if you have money, you can get a DUI and be back driving on the streets in no time. A guy i tutored, has had three DUI's, was 23, but never spent time in jail or lost his license for longer than a month because his parents had money and they knew judges and such.

There are so many things like this i am starting to dislike about how things are run in the U.S.

Savvyav, thank God you and the fam are alright and i pray the baby is in perfect condition.
