Diode Dynamics: LEDs vs. OEM incandescents

I ordered some LEDs from Diode Dynamics last week.

I went for cool white colors, in the lowest-power configuration. I'm not looking for blazing power with license plate lights, backup lights, or interior lights.

I started off by swapping out one of the two license plate lights.

Bulb on the left is the OEM incandescent.

Bulb on the right is the Diode Dynamics cool white, SMD1 (16 lumens).

It's not much brighter, but that's not the point. I'm looking for more efficient, and less draw on the system. These run very cool.

I installed the rear dome light in cool white; the SMD6 Board (56 lumens). Hard to take pictures of this with an iPhone camera, but this should show something of the sort. Light is much cooler temp than stock, and, even though I went with the lowest-output light, it was much brighter than stock. Light went in with a bulb replacement with a pair of power wires out to a flat circuit board with 6 LEDs in it; sticks to the inside of the light with a piece of double-sided tape.

DD LED in foreground; OEM behind.

Build quality and packaging are really nice. Designed and tested in the USA, assembled in China.

I'm going forward with more purchases from DD to replace the rest of the interior lights, turn signals, and side markers. My expectation is that the electrical draw will come down a little bit with these, but every bit counts.
Diode Dynamics likes this.

Re: Diode Dynamics: LEDs vs. OEM incandescents

Looks good, I have replaced all my oem bulbs with LEDs, for the same reason, eco-friendly...
When you do the indicators, don't forget to swap out the controller for a LED flasher unit.
Its a PITA to get to, up under the dash, behind the fuse box, but once done ..its done... and the indicators will flash correctly....

Thanks for the review!

Have you submitted any photos yet? We have introduced several new bulb models recently, and the SMD1 is very much an entry level LED bulb option
