Diesel love affairs

I really dont understand everybody's love affair with diesel motors? They are loud, smoke, less horsepower, ect and fuel is just as expensive. I know there is the torque factor and reliability, but for example the FJ can only tow 5000 lbs and the factory gas motor does fine with it. I have pulled a 21' Tige wakeboard boat with mine and had no problems as far as the power goes.

Yeah, they're terrible...

They get better gas mileage, they don't smoke anymore, the fuel is the same price, they aren't loud anymore, they have the same horsepower, they have more torque, they're easier to work on, and they last for 300,000 miles...

I don't get it either...

Re: Diesel love affairs

I dont know about the smoking issue, ive seen new jettas with a big black ring around their bumper where the exhaust pipe comes out. Sure I know about the BMW 320d and its win at Nurburgring (sp?) and the outstanding strides in engine management that have been associated with diesels lately. But my dad drives a 92 BMW 535i on the interstate a lot and has 327k on it and the mechanic said it will last easily to 500k. Is it just better engineering that is going into diesels or what?

Like all engines they are constantly under development. The majority of all vehicles in europe are diesel. The engine lasts for so long because of a number of factors, but the easy answer is it's a "simpler" engine. Diesel engines that smoke excessively are out of tune and need to be adjusted.

You're right. You really don't understand it.

Re: Diesel love affairs

One of the main 'things' about a diesel motor is the torque available right from idle. A very good thing in a vehicle designed for off roading.

I, for one, am happy with the FJ's powerplant. Plenty of torque, plenty of power, and no turbo that WONT live as long as the engine. Nothing to worry about on the FJ. Just dead reliable toyota V6.

(of course we DID just purchase a brand new car 25 days ago that is infact turbocharged, a 2007 Mazda CX-7. Oh well, mobil1 synthetic and im sure the turbo will live a long life. And the Mazda 2.3 is a very stout motor)

Re: Diesel love affairs

This year should not be a good year for the diesel. The E Mf P A has mandated the sulfur be taken out of Diesel in 2007. Sulfur acts as a lubricant.
