I went wheeling in the mountains this weekend for about 5 hours in about a foot of snow, went through mud puddles about a foot and a half deep and then back into the snow and did not have any problems. I like the placement.
And why didn't you invite me ???? That's what I wanna know....
Just got my hands on Issue:02 of the FJ Cruiser Fall 2006 magazine!
Guess what? Give up? Ok...I'll tell ya!
It just so happens to have the tech specs on the intake. I can see why they are confident you won't get anything in there unless you try to pretend your FJ is a Ohio Class submarine!
Check it out!
Position of the intake relative to the louvered vent in the well housing.
Direction of the louvers
Position of the intake relative to the maximum water fording depth that you not try to exceed!
Great post Trader, good job silencing the doubters.

Ah, okay...took a closer look (took off the breather inlet inside the engine compartment), and youre right in that there really isnt any way for debris to get sucked in at those numerous angles. Good to know! Its a really wild intake system inside.
However, I still think that the intake vents will clog up with snow come winter driving for us here in OR/WA/BC/AB/AK. Looks as though it will still be able to get some airflow, though restricted at that.

Dont know if he could really silence me, but okay...
This system could still be improved (alot) mind you.
Dirty....You! Silent? That would be an afront to the forum Gods. I do agree with you view on clogging the vents , but I think air will still find its way into that area regardless. In Florida we don't have snowstorms....we call them hurricanes....LOl!

What I'm wondering is what happens if that occurs? When I would drive my subaru WRX and snow would get on the intercooler, it seemed to have a little more pep because of the colder air....be kinda neat if it was that noticable...but I doubt it.

As my Dad would have said, "Nobody stopping you". Sometimes We think something could be improved (alot) until we dealve into it a little more closely and we actually gain an appreciation of the basic design.
It isn't a snorkel system (if thats what is meant by alot) but I'm not sure how many production rigs come stock with a snorkel.
So the question becomes, is the thread title correct? Should it be changed from "Poor Location of Air Intake" to "Air Intake Location Understood and Acceptable"?

Indeed, I think it could be retitled acceptable actually. Though, then nobody would look at it and chime in!
Oh, okay. There, better?
