This is a trick I used on countless XJ cherokees and was wondering if anybody has done it on the FJ yet. Remove the stock mechanical fan and replace with an electric one. Since I live in the extreme north I don't have to worry about ambient getting above 85F in the summer month. With the 4.0 in the XJ I noticed the engine would spool up faster and seemed a little more peppy with maybe an increase in mileage although that might pushing it. Also seemed to warm up faster which is a problem here in AK with a warm up time at around 5 minutes....

Dosen't this make your alternator work harder? I am thinking the energy has to come from somewhere. If it were a big gas mileage thing manufacturers would all do it, so it must be a give / take somewhere.
If the stock alternator is 100 amps this is more than enough. The fan should only be running durring stop and go and at idle. If your doing more than 25-30 mph the fan is not doing anything to cool the motor anyway. On the other hand the stock fan is turning all the time. Sure it has the fluid clutch and all but if you start your motor cold, the fan is turning. Wether its fully engaged or not its sapping power. Figure an electric fan and thermostat to run you around 250.00 TOPS. Thats cheep power. How much are headers and exhaust and for what gains??? I guess the warranty would still be good unless you kill the motor by overheating it huh? Wouldn't the little black box be able to show the operating temp in case of a claim on the motor? Just curious. Off topic but my engine sounds like it has 150k on it sometimes. Other times you can't even tell its running. I'm sure its fine but I have never heard so many diffent sounds from the same engine before.
This actually sounds like a pretty good idea. An electric fan should be able to keep the engine temp regulated better than the mechanical one. And better temp regulation = longer engine life.
The only thing I worry about is getting the electric fan wet, as in submerged. That might be a problem. Perhaps that is why they used the mechanical one.
I put a Flexo-lite on my 88 4Runner that had a hotter cam, head...header, and 2.5" exhaust.
That thing was a pain to dial in to come on at the right temp....after many almost overheatings....I got it right. All it had was a dial you turned after the temp was where you wanted it....then it was supposed to come on at that same temp all the time....well it did sometimes.
I would do it....but I would be highly tempted by another design/setup for the FJC.

The electric fan has an advantage in water - you can turn it off, so you don't shoot the engine bay full of the sludge your wading through...most elec fans use weather-proof connections to prevent probs with moisture in normal use, and you add an on-off override switch to help when crossing streams, etc...

I'm pretty sure that people make water proof fans just for us fording fond offroaders. At least they do for Jeep.....I think
