Block Heater

I guess you can't get a block heater from the factory when you order your FJ. I live in an area that typically sees -teensF in the winter and the FJ will be parked outside. I'm sure it wil start just fine on it's own without a block heater, but I prefer to preheat the engine on those brutally cold winter morning starts. What are folks using that seems to work.

Thanks, DEWFPO

Re: Block Heater

You will need to order one from Toyota and install it yourself or have the dealer do it. Here is some info.

Re: Block Heater

I called my the parts department in Burnsville Mn. They have a part number for the FJ specific Block Heater, and they were available.

Part # 00113-00213-00889

Price was $48.88 and they will ship.

Re: Block Heater

This is great, thanks 20Montana for the updated number. I was already having trouble finding the previous number. It will be the first addition to my new FJC when it arrives.

Re: Block Heater

Don't get jacked around on the price. My dealer is selling them on E-Bay, and said people were paying as high as 91$ just for the Heater. But maybe some dealers are charging more. PM me if you need help. Its a simple install, so do it yourself, and save a few bucks.

Re: Block Heater

I just ordered one from a dealer in MN because the responses I got from my local western CO dealer (service mgr and parts guy) were all negative.

They advised against using them for the following reasons :

- can't get one (were only available from '85 -'95 from Toyota)
- limited access to install
- rots out
- can't get spare parts when they go bad
- they don't seal up
- too many problems

They do not stock them and do not sell them.

I've used them for years in everything I own. Never had a problem. Although this is a different design then I am used to. It doesn't actualy replace a freeze out plug like it does in my trucks and tractor. So I don't know how they'd rot out, leak, not seal up, etc....

Heh, funny excuses. My dad has used block heaters in Northern BC where they have real harsh winters and he has never had any issue with the block heaters.

Here it an option you can order from the Toyota dealership, but not really needed in my neck of the woods where we have a milder, wet, rainy winter.

I want one for my mountain cabin though - its cold there.

Re: Block Heater

As a fellow CDN, i know that block heaters are a must. If you don't believe in them, try starting at -35C with a -53C wind chill! The block heater on the FJ is almost pointless. The external element is the worst kind of heater. I had one on a 86' CRX...... In extreme weather it has to be plugged in for several hours before the benefits are present. What they need is heat in the coolant. A Webasto diesel heater is presently in the works, hot in half and hour. For now, its 0W-30 synthetic.
