I was wondering how the manual transmission gearing held up on the highway?? I had a Tacoma a few years back with so little power, heading up a hill meant I had to go from 5th to 4th to maintain 75 MPH... I also had a 6 speed in my Corvette and in it, 6th was more of an overdrive gear... Now I have a Hummer H3 with an auto but due to the lack of HP it drops two (count em, 2) gears to maintain 75 up hills (under cruise control)... As you might expect, it is certain a more violent happening than anyone might do with their own car using their own foot... It, coupled with GM's transmission reliability, is the main reason I have no desire to own this post warranty... My only exception to being a manual man - heart and sole is the pain of living between 5th and 6th gear every 5 miles on long highway runs... Any word on that???
stay in 5th or buy a automatic, I live in CO and shifting is just part daily driving in the mountains. Cruise control will kick off if your in sixth and the grade is too steep.

I honestly don't feel that you could go wrong with either tranny choice....the AT is a strong AT....it seems to shift at good times, and it commits to a shift when it makes it.....and the MT of course you choose the times......
No matter what w/ a MT you're going to have to drop a gear to hold 75 mph up a decent grade....unless you have a sh!tton of torque.....and it's all variable by tire setups/lifts/how much junk you carry in your FJ, etc.....
In a nutshell - Find a MT - Test Drive it, and then you'll have a much better feel for it....

I have a MT and have no issues with it on the highway. I usually keep it in 6th on trips from Baltimore to Fenwick Island, DE. The FJ cruisers nicely and is very powerful.
This vehicle has plenty of power, keeps 75 up most grades in 6th, sometimes you may have to downshift to 5th if going up a step grade, but not very often. All 6th does is give you better milage, you could drive 5th all day long, your RPM's at 75mph are not that high. I had the same concern, but test drove up I-40 through east mountains it did just fine.
I head out to the mountains all the time, I find the only time I have to go down to 5th is if I'm slowing down for the car ahead of me. At 80 mph passing in 6th is pretty easy; between 60 and 70 you generally have to go down to 5th.
No probs- have driven the manual up & down steep mountain hwys with a piano & camping gear in the back- 6th gear up long mountain passes, engine was running so low I could hardly hear it- no power probs. The cruise control with the manual gives you the best of both worlds IMO .

When you camp with your piano, is an upright or a grand?

Just went for a drive ,so I got exact RPMs for you. At 75mph in 6th;2500rpm:75mph in 5th 3200rpm so you can see even if you have to downshift you still aren't having to run high rpms to keep 75 up steep grades. This vehicle has plenty of power. Remember, you will also be able to super charge it sometime in the future. Really don't believe you need it, for me it's not a need but a want. I love the mods. Believe me, you won't be having to downshift (to keep 75mph) much during highway driving, even in the moutains.
