Accidentally went into reverse at high speed, but nothing happened...?
Looking for some help understanding what happened... A few days ago I was getting on an onramp and was switching the AT from 3 (rd gear) to D when some guy cut me off and I got flustered in and overshot the "D" and somehow went all the way up to "R"! Yikes! I instantly pulled it back down into N, then D. The "beep" noise associated with the reverse proximity being active sounded, so I was definitely in R. There were no bad noises, no sound of crunching gears or exploding gear boxes. So, what happened? Is the car smart enough that it refused to go into R? Did I do any harm to the transmission, I was going at 45 or something?
Thanks.

Reason: trying to figure out why my sig didn't show up...

I thank the engineers and the ECU for saving me from myself... and for you guys for telling me they did. (I had no idea the ECU was involved in that decision, cool!). I did a couple searches before posting, didn't see anything related, but now that I redo it I found the one you presumably meant right here.
Thanks again.

Re: Accidentally went into reverse at high speed, but nothing happened...?
my dad, an airline captain, told a story about how once, for no apparant reason, a pilot of a 707 at cruising altitude reached over and pulled all four engine throttles all the way back and into full reverse, deploying the reversers at 550 MPH or so. This caused some serious flight control issues to arise, but the other pilot was able to recover the airplane before it crashed.
There was no software in those days in the flight control system to speak of.
The first pilot never could really say why he pulled the engines into reverse; he had just been in kindof a daze when suddenly he did it.
So if that pilot is still around, I guess it is good to know that, if he happens to drive an FJ, the ECU will be there for him.

Must be that nobody truly believes an 'ol used-up hillbilly from the swamps of Kzoo county....
The noise you heard was one immediately preceeding another much nastier one and believe me....the "ECU" won't save you the next time this happens at perhaps a much slower speed.
Not trying to be a long-time-listener "Mr. Obvious" here; yet there seems to be incorrect info being (unintentionally) spread here on both threads regarding an issue that could happen to any one of us prettydarneasily.(and please don't ask me just how I might know this.... )
Again, I'm not saying that there aren't safeguards built in...just that I wouldn't get all ****y about same for the sake of a sudden 'stop' that'll wake you right up......
