Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

Anyone else with a 6MT and TRD exhaust hear bubbly noises? It sounds something like what you expect to hear from a 5.0L Mustang or something even more fuel inefficient than the FJ.

Can anyone explain what that sound is? I think it might have something to do with the slowing of exhaust gases behind previously fast and rapidly expanding gases creating a slight vaccuum in between, but I'm probably out to lunch. I've never had a vehicle create that sound so I never cared enough to see what causes it.

Thanks in advance!

Joel

Re: Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

That sound is simply, that irritating TRD exhaust system. Your probably getting it with engine braking I assume. If my FJ started sounding like a 5.0 Mustang, I'd thank me lucky stars! My TRD exhaust sounds more like a droning groaning nauseating something or other during most of the daily street driving. It really is starting to get to me. Off-road however, I don't mind it at all, and even like it oddly.

backpressure? you should have heard my alum 5.3L in the Silverado with the exhaust work, intake, and other small perf. mods.

Re: Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

6MT w/ TRD exhaust here...no 'bubbling' noise to speak of. Can't say I'm unhappy with the TRD, just the opposite, I love it...some complain about the noise, but personally this is the quietest vehicle I've ever owned (but then again I've never had anything but V8's & V10's with great dual exhaust setups).

Drove a few stock exhaust 6MT and HATED the fact that I couldn't even hear the engine. I prefer to use my ears and butt when it comes to making a shift...the TRD exhaust is the perfect blend of just enough noise IMO.

Good luck with that bubble problem, not really sure what you're talking about without personally hearing said noise.

if you were to leave a V8 with exhuast on it in 1st, accelerate and back off and let the motor slow you down, it thats backpressure, popping and gurgling that he's talking about, i think.

Re: Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

Yeah, so what causes said backpressure?? Looking for the physics in it...

Re: Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

well FJoel, the exhaust an acoustic transmission line, and kinks and other discontinuities such as cats, mufflers, and even the end of the pipe cause echoes to occur in the transmission line. These echoes can cancel each other out, or they can superimpose upon one another, doubling up. Which happens depends on the frequency of the exhaust (speed of the engine)... so as the engine speed changes, the standing wave ratio changes also, and the echo cancelling / doubling effect changes, and this gargley sound is the result of all that I think.

In other words, it is due to the Coriolis Effect.
Does it happen more when you are going east or west?

Re: Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

I know all about back pressure 'music' when coming off a hard acceleration and letting your engine slow you down (my K5 without fail has the best back pressure bang I've ever heard...built 350, headers, 2 1/2" straight dual exhaust with Flowmasters), but I've never experienced anything close to back pressure bang with my FJ. I pretty much drive all my trucks the same and my driving style would be classified as very aggressive, but again, never heard even a slight rumble from the FJ even under the most severe engine break slow downs. I'm not convinced this is back pressure pop based on what I've read, but again, without personally hearing/driving the FJ in question, everything I write is just speculation at this point.

Personally, I've never experienced any kind of real back pressure pop with a modern, electronically controlled FI engine...as mentioned; those kinds of experiences are much more common in basic, non computer, carbureted engines. Sure you hear this phenomenon all the time w/ the most advanced F1 race cars ect., but usually absent when talking about your average tame street car/SUV like our FJs.

Re: Bubbles in my TRD exhaust!

not much you can do about this. I paid $1500 for an exhaust on my z and while it's minimal, it's still evident.. just comes with bigger piping, I guess.
