I took my FJ into get its oil changed and when I got it back there was an oil leak. So I took it back to Longo of El Monte and they said it was a power stearing leak. Then they said it was a leak from my oil pan gasket, which needed to be replaced. So I call this morning and they are telling me oil is leaking through the timing cover. Is this even possible? Or did they cross thread my oil pan and ruin it?

Maybe they ought to figure out what's leaking out of their mechanic's
brain...how they can get either of those two alternatives mixed up
with a pan gasket, I don't know.
IA good thing for future reference, when a problem
like this shows its self, Give a good look around to
see if you can spot the oil leak first... I myself would
at this point, would go to a self power wash and hit
the problem areas a little and loook to see where the
leak is at yourself...
Two things it could be...
1. If you Hit the areas in question with a power washer
close and long enough in the past to erode the gaskets...
2. The toyota dealer is looking to make some Warrenty
Bucks from your rig doing un-needed work to collect a
fat check from ToyotaUSA...
You know what it probably is? The slob probably either slopped
all over the place changing the oil filter, then couldn't get it all
cleaned up so it dripped everywhere OR dribbled when he was
putting the new oil in, and didn't clean up the resulting mess.
So now you've got oil sitting in various spots and it keeps getting
blown around.
You may not have a leak at all.
By the way, if it's the oil plug that's usually real obvious by the
trail leading from the hole or the drop sitting on the head of the
plug.
Ya know, The Gents at my Oil Change pace said, he
seen someone pull the filter off with out putting the
cup under the catch drain hole, and ya know what
happened ???... OIL LEAK... Outa' of the little drain
plug hole at the oil filter...
NICE Thought there Gascolator !!!... Makes the Most
Sense considering they don't know what they are
talking about to begin with...
Biff: "Yo Charlie, You did take the plug out before you pulled the Oil filter off that FJ... RIGHT !!!..."
Charlie: "AAAhhh... YEAaaa, Of Course I Did"...
*Charlie quikly gets a cup and pulls the plug to drain what did not spill down the front of the engine*
LONG PAUSE.............
Charlie: "This here FJ Has oil running down the front of the engine, Must be an Oil leak or something..."
Biff: "Its Warrenty Work... Right it Up !!!"...

Another very good reason why I don'nt let stealerships touch my FJ. I do my own oil changes.
I did this with a new 1989 4x4 Toyota pickup that I owned years ago. It never ever saw a Toyota mechanic and it ran trouble free for YEARS. Just an observation. If you can do you own maintenance. Or find a really good stealerships.
My guess is that the so called tech doing the oil change got really messy as suggested by some earlier posts. I would bet on this.
Cheers!

I also agree with the spilled oil theory, when I was 17 I used tto work for a jiffy lube and we would get customers complaining of oil leaks and such but from expeirence I've found that A)most the time it is oil pooled on the frame or other crevices, B)they overcranked the plug and cracked the gasket, or C) they put the wrong filter on, some filters are the same size and thread but the rubber gasket is a different diameter. A can of brake clean usually did the trick for the first option, the other two obviously need to be changed.
