First off, you can probably do the labor yourself (I installed one on my old Tacoma and my old Corvette). Second, the $350 for the TRD version is extremely expensive, even more than one for a Corvette, or, as you said, a Porsche. Lastly, URD makes a short shifter for the FJs for $149, considerably more cost effective. The TRD shifter claims to shorten throws by 30%, the URD by 44%. So for half the price you could have shorter throws and, in effect, probably a crisper shift. I had the URD short shifter on my 05 Tacoma (same engine and tranny as the FJs) and it worked great, did the install myself in about 45 minutes. The only downside about it was that it was harder to shift into reverse, but from what I understand, the same is true for the TRD shifter. The only advantage I see to the TRD shifter is that it is TRD and therefore your warranty wouldn't be affected, but, IMHO, the URD is a better set up at a much better price.

On another note, the stock shift knob sits really high on the manuals, I noticed that switching to one of the round TRD knobs lowered the height considerably and made for a slightly nicer shift feel.

Here's the thread I started. I like the TRD shifter, I got mine from TRDSource and did the install my self. It's is a little pricey versus the URD and reverse is a harder to get into. I think the URD has gotten some good reviews. I think either option is better than stock.
