Could you show us any pictures? That would be greatly appreciated. The tapping has been bugging me for quite a while now.
Driver's side, just aft of the oil filler tube is a thick hose with a black, fuel filter type cylinder in the hose. This hose attaches to the valve. It also has a light gray, plastic electrical connector just aft of where the above hose attaches.

There is one, very easily accessible 10 mm bolt that comes out, the valve is now loose. Pull the bolt completely out of the valve. I put a black rubber washer on the bolt, then put the bolt into the flange of the valve, then put a thick, black, rubber grommet(compressible) on the end of the bolt, then put the bolt back into the brass orifice on the intake manifold and snugged it down, but not too tight. Took all of 5 mins.

So far so good. We'll see how it does under all conditions. Mine would tap badly when very cold and when hot. At idle and accellerating. Now at idle all I hear are the fuel injectors tapping, quite normally.

Cost me 30 cents each for the grommet and the rubber washer. A total of 60 cents at my local hardware store.

There is a picture/schematic of this valve on the label under your hood. It is the PWM purge valve.

Thanks, I finally found it! That little thing makes/transmits the noise? I have not heard it yet but took a pre-emptive strike with the isolation of it.

Re: Fix for tapping at idle.

Lots going on under those valve covers fellas, If it ain't broke...

If the sound of moving engine parts makes you uncomfortable buy a Mercedes S class, if that's not possible...definetly not for Me, go get some Dynamat material for your FJ's engine bay, start it up, close your eyes and you'll think your in the S class.

Re: Fix for tapping at idle.

When I discovered this ticking valve, I used my stethoscope all over the motor to see if anything else was making noise. The valve train was silent, no noise from the VVTI, a little from the PS pump and alt. (normal). slight noise from injectors (normal). Other than that, there is no mechanical noise from the insides of these motors. (I run Mobile 1 synth.) There is a little noise from the fuel lines that is transmitted from the injectors pulsing. The pulley driven fan makes alot of wind noise even when the clutch is inactive. Once you isolate that stupid PWM purge valve, you will be satisfied with the sound of your engine.

Re: Fix for tapping at idle.

What a relief! My GF drives the FJ to and from work, and I only get to play with it on the weekends. We bought it in Early Dec, and I hadn't noticed any noises untill the last time I started it up in the garage I noticed the tapping, thought one of my little excursions may have pushed a little too hard, too early in the engine's life... Thanks for the post, I'm sure I'm not the only one relieved to hear there is a systematic effect, and that it's not a "damage" issue.

Cheers!

Re: Fix for tapping at idle.

Thanks for the info! I really thought that it was a lifter issue and was dreading a trip to the dealer service dept.

mikesfj - I did your fix last night in about 2 minutes to try it out. Hats off to you with some serious points. The freekin tap tap tap noise is no longer heard inside the cabin. You are the MAN! I appreciate the info.
