hmm seems like alot of people have this issue with the clutch. I wrote about this burning clutch smell earlier Reverse in 6MT
For some reason the clutch seems to have a burning smell when feathered which should not be the case because it has not do this in any other car i've ever owned. I first thought it was a break in thing but at 6000 miles i highly doubt this.
Anyone have an idea/fix?

O.K., here's a story for you...
Wife calls me and tells me there is smoke "billowing" from the FJ. This occurred while she was in a McDonald's drive through. She was not riding the clutch and she knows how to drive one. Her 1992 Honda Civic had 110,000 miles with the ORIGINAL clutch! I thought for sure it was an electrical short. I then had the FJ towed to the dealership. They call me back and tell me the electrical system is fine and they THINK it may be the clutch, but the only way to be sure is to pull the tranny and that will be big bucks (and not covered under warranty). To make a long story short, they simply could not find the problem without pulling the tranny and I was not about to pay $1,000 for them to take a look and then possibly fork out more money for repairs. My buddy (xcrement) who is a forum member, has had it the last two days and has been driving it. He has reported no problems, in fact, he said it is riding beautifully! The smell from the initial burn is still evident but will go away with time. I am scared about this whole situation - who knows when it will happen next? The hell of it is that I have a 6M too! When is it going to be my turn? This is Bull****!!!

Hmmmm... I admit that I'm hard on my vehicles and have owned and driven many with manual transmissions. I've smoked the clutches on a few of them in the past a time or two and never had any major problems with them afterwards. I also haven't had any problems with the clutch on my 6 MT FJ so far.

I very embarrasingly smoked mine a few months ago trying to climb a dune (in front of 15 other FJs.) I mean, smoke billowing up and blowing over the truck. I let it cool off before moving the truck again and I haven't had any more problems since. That was about 7k miles ago and everything still feels as solid as it did before.
Do not feather the clutch !... You really don't need
to, the FJ has an abundance of power... You just
need to get the FJ rolling a tad from a full stop, and
you are good to go, then let the engine pull you, not
the RPM's and feathering, or you will burn the clutch !...
The old toyota 5speed pickups with the four bangers,
the ones I had in the 80's IMO anyway, had too much
of a gap between the gears, and when off roading in
certain situations, you had to feather the clutch to
keep you momentum up... Again, as far as the FJ and
the MT6, with it being AWD, adds alot more pressure
to the drivetrain, which works the clutch much harder
then the ol' toyota from back when...
Thanks Crotalus and Macleod for your input. This makes me feel a bit more relaxed reading about your experiences. I can only hope that my wife's situation is similiar (to yours).
Crotalus, how many miles on your FJ?

OhhYeaaaaa... One more thing... Don't be afraid
to slip er' into Low-Range when on the trail and
facing an obsticle, that is what it is for, to get
more power to the wheels...
If you try in High-Range and need to more power
quickly, people tend to feather the clutch and
burn it some, it is much better/easier to slide it
in before hand, and just move up to a higher gear
if you want more speed, and if you get a bogged
down, just downshift and off you go...
