Changed with dino @ 800 miles and again at 3,000 miles...Change all my fluids (diffs., trans, transerfer case, etc.) to Redline synthetics @6k miles...Noticed a huge diff. when I was pulling out of the mechanics...Going to flip the engine oil every 5k miles or so...I wheel least once a month on an all day wheelin' trip...
I am considering switching everything to Redline also, could you tell me the specific products to buy?
Thank you
Just had my oil changed in the fj today (4,700 mi.) Told the tech to put the synthetic in - he said "next time". Manual suggests after the 10K mark. What do you guys (and gals) think? This oil change was a "freebie", so the rest of them I will do with Royal Purple!
I just did a search of the Owners manual and the repair manual pdf and there is no mention of synthetic oil what-so-ever. I don't think Toyota has a recomendation for use or when you start using or continued usage of synthetic one way or another as long as it meets ILSAC standards and you change it every 5000 miles. I think the tech is BS'n you. Personally I have been using only Mobil 1 for years and it has been the factory fill on several of my cars.
the only thing that you have to worry about, when going to synthetics, is the type of ring package. on a modern vehicle, the rings will set very early, 500 to 1500 miles, depending on how you drive. no other concerns are warranted.
Be careful of the Myth's. There is NOT a waiting period. Better, more powerful, more euro, more techno advanced cars come with Mobil 1.
FYI. Go to mobil 1's website. They have a myth section for all the people that "heard it from this person, or the radio 15 years ago" crap.
.
So ture. One good rule of thumb is that anyone who changes oil probably has limited experience working on cars and is not a good source for information or insight. (Just like car salesmen don't know anything about the cars they sell.)
Another myth, Once you use synthetic oils you can never use Dino oil again.
This is so not true. For one, have you heard of Dura Blend which is a mix of synthetic and Dino oils. Years ago I would synthetic oils when I could afford it and go to dino oil when low on cash. Synthetic is better, but the biggest thing is to just change your oil at the recommended miles with the best oil you can afford.
Put Synthetic in at 7,000. Wouldn't run anything else, synthetic oil has been used in aircraft engines since its inception. Also, note one of those engines cost more than an entire FJ. Wouldn't use anything else.

Not a mechanic, but are you saying synthetics have an adverse effect in this regard? Is this mentioned in the manual?
