Performance chip

Has anyone tried a after market chip? I see on eBay people are selling a chip for real cheap. Sounds like a plug with a paper clip in it that they claim improves fuel mileage and HP.

Re: Performance chip

Use caution when looking at chips that are 6 bucks...Most are just a resistor and do absolutely nothing.

Edit....I should have elaborated, as Doug said...Nothing GOOD!

They do something... screw up your gas mileage, and turn on the check engine light!
If toyota could get an easy 5 to 10HP out of the 4.0L without affecting fuel mileage and driveability they would have. The resistors some on ebay sell "fool" your computer into thinking it is cooler outside, and/or the engine coolant is at a cooler temputure which makes it run richer. Too rich of a mixture does not give more power.
I think with todays technology Toyota has figured out how to program a computer so it works best for mileage and power than it will with a "false imput" to the computer. Twenty years ago when most auto manufacturers were making everything run way too lean those may have done something.

Re: Performance chip

A couple of people have put in a unichip. They like them. They can be expensive though. The cheapest I have found them is $672. I am thinking about getting one.

Re: Performance chip

Unichip is the only performance chip I have found for the FJ, but I haven't found any first hand reports here on this chip. Based on the Unichip specs, it really doesn't add that much so I believe this engines are pretty agressivesly tuned for HP and TQ from the factory.

Re: Performance chip

If you search you will find that cruiserlarry has one and likes it, also I believe audiox got the first one as his rig was used to prototype the fj unichip. There is a thread on here somewhere that explains what the unichip is and isn't. I may get one in the next month or two. They are at their best when used in conjunction with a cai and exhaust. The maker of the unichip explained all of this in a post awhile back.
