KBA catback exhaust installed, first impressions

First off, not pics yet. Just finished install last night late, but will post soon... sorry.

So I installed my JBA catback late last night. It's built pretty well. Fit was nice no issues with install. Took about 1 hour, most of which was removing the stock exhaust, (two of the bolts from the muffler to the tail pipe, were a little tought to break free). It's all stainless, but is not fully polished. The tip is a 3 1/2 ' round chrome plated. It looks nice and fits the car well. Although it follows the same line at the stock exhaust so from the side it looks like it's angled down slightly. Overall not too bad.

First drive:

The system is definately louder than stock. At idle it has a little bit of a rumble pretty mellow. Off idle it starts to wake up. Under normal driving, you can hear it. Under acceleration it is loud.

Overall impression:

Sound quality--A bit too "ricer" for me. Doesn't drone or resonate so much but just has that fast and furious tone to it. You get a little bit of popping during decelleration.

Sound level -- Nice at ldle, on the louder side at highway speeds, pretty loud with the petal to the metal.

Build quality -- Built nicley, no issues. quality piece.

Performance -- No seat of the pants difference from my first few drives. I already have the TRD CAI. That made much more of a difference than the exhuast from what I can tell.

Overall -- I will be switching back to stock. This is a nice set up but too loud for me in my daily driver. If I had another 100hp I wound't mind so much, but with a stock V6 too much bark and not enough bite for the noise level.

Recommendation -- Good set up if you want a louder well built catback. I only paid $267 after tax and shipping on ebay, so not bad for the price.

If anyone is interested in buying my slightly used JBA catback PM me

~C

Re: KBA catback exhaust installed, first impressions

Hey C, Ah man I was hoping for a good review from you as my JBA cat back system is coming today. I too hate that "ricer" sound but the part that I really didn't like was "You get a little bit of popping during deceleration". Is yours a stick or automatic? Having a manual trans I would think would tend to bring out more of the popping. I have the automatic trans so maybe that would not be an issue for me. Now I'm thinking of just putting it right back up on eBay if yours is also an automatc...lol. Anyway, Thanks for the detailed review and your impressions on this system...

Re: KBA catback exhaust installed, first impressions

I'm getting mine today, should have it on tomorrow. If it's too "ricer" I'll just cut off the 3.5" tip and put on a 3" or 2.5". Big exhaust tips make a huge difference in noise.

JBA Performance Exhaust - Toyota FJ Cruiser Headers and Exhaust Systems

Here's a clip from the JBA site. Pretty close to what I observed. It's not as bad as the tuner cars, but just had a hollow tone that I didn't care for. It's pretty much a strait through muffler and with the 3 1/2 tip Gofasterdammi is right it changes the sound a bit.

Too bad, it's a great price for a stainless set.

BTW mine is still up for sale....

I just installed it and I couldn't believe how quiet it was. It's maybe a litte louder than a TRD exhaust. I'm happy with it!

Thanks for the link C. I saw that page before but couldn't get the sound clips to play until I saw I had to install AC3 Filter code...Free-Codecs.com :: Download AC3 Filter 1.20 : AC3 Filter is a DirectShow filter for AC3 decoding to get them to work. But like you said before it's all subjective...sound clips sounded good to me (I heard that slight popping you spoke of) but live and in person we'll see. I'm going to give it a shot.
