So I heard about it, had to try it. Pics are pretty self-explanatory...
Need cooler tools...
Need bigger airbox...
The hole ended up kinda ragged, so sealed it with some urethane tubing...
The only spot on the airbox with enough surface area is tucked against the firewall.
Pretty warm there too, so we'll see if it make a difference.
Not only will that mod do nothing much on the outside of the filter, it is also an illegal modification in all 50 states...what are you hoping to accomplish (besides the need to purchase an additional air filter housing before your next emissions test..) ???

Good thing it's an emmissions exempt vehicle in CO and with the deckplate intalled it's street legal, but I don't expect anyone other than me to pry under the hood. Other than that we'll have to see if there is any actual performance differance. For $10 and 30 minutes, what the hell?? TTORA Forum - The "Deckplate Mod"

Just to be clear for others reading this, while your FJC might be emissions testing exempt wher you are, modifying emissions equipment (which includes the air intake system) is still illegal in all 50 states (violation of Federal Emissions standards). Whether anyone who cares will see it is another story - and whether you might have a warranty issue for modifying emissions equipment is another point to consider...hope it helps...

most places everything needs to be there and not circumvented in anyway, hence the trd intake being legal, IAT, MAF, filter and so on all in place and doing their jobs. this mod brings air in past the MAF and IAT unless I am mistaken, so it is a problem anywhere you get emissions testing.

Good point.
This stupid gimmick has been touted on TTORA for years as a way to get "something for nothing", and the only verifiable results are the ones you stated (emissions hassles and warranty hassles)- in addition to making a "noise" that the kids seem to like.
Bypassing the air filter is about the most dumbass thing I've ever seen done to a vehicle. In fact. one idiot in Fort Worth hydrolocked his Taco due to his "mod".
