Did I hurt my FJ? : (

When I first bought my FJ (5spd Auto) I put it in 4 HIGH for about 35 miles on a combination of dry and wet pavement. (yes I was very stupid - I never had a 4 X4 before).... When I was going very slow on the dry pavement the car would start acting weird - my rear left wheel even broke free and chirped.... I felt as if the car was binding.... especially when I was going between 1-5 mph and turning while in 4-H. it just wasnt turning right or acting "smooth" at low speeds. And when I was at a red light it would feel as if the car was going to stall but then lurch forward....

Then my friend said that I need to get it out of 4-H and to only use 4-H on "loose terrain"

Do you think I have hurt anything?? 35 miles on dry and wet pavement in 4-H.

embarassed 1st time fj owner.

No, you should be OK. Don't sweat it until the wheels fall off. You didn't buy a Toyota for nothing. The only thing you did was unecceasarily put wear on your tires. Save the gizmos for off-roading.

Almost certain you didn't hurt anything in that short distance. The binding you felt is normal in 4HI on dry pavement. Just shouldn't do that for extended distance unless the road is wet, or it's a dirt or gravel road.

What about "axle binding"

I am reading all these horror stories online about driving in 4WD mode (part time 4WD) on dry pavement....?
it says that driving in 4WD (on pavement) on a part time 4WD vehicle will ruin it!

I looked in my manual and it said that in 4h the front wheels would only kick in if they lost traction...and that it was fine to drive on dry pavement...You just wont get as good as gas mileage as in 2h.....

In 4-wheel drive , both axles are engaged all the time. That why when you turn sharp, it binds because the tires are biting at a tight angle on dry pavement. It will even do it on snow ,as I have had this happen.

Re: Did I hurt my FJ? : (

You didnt hurt anything. All of the M/T FJ owners run 4x4 all the time and nothing happens to their rigs whether on highway or not. Putting it in 4 wheel drive is good for the damn thing either offroad or on the highway at 65.
