Looking to see if there is interest in doing a dyno run comparison of any/all available Cold Air kits out there?
I have access to a 4 wheel dyno facility and would like to see which one works the best.
I am not a retailer, so this holds no business interest for me, just curiosity.
AEM has been gracious enough and donated one of their units, but so far thats the only one.
Obviously, there is a significant cost involved in hiring out a dyno shop for a good part of the day and I would like to split the cost with anybody interested. One of the ways we can do this is if I keep the intake after the run and sell it, but I'm also open to other ideas. If there are any retailers out there that could benefit from actual scientific evidence, back to back, then let's figure something out.
If I don't hear back then I will do an A/B with stock and the AEM.
most intake systems are going to give the same increases across the board - AEM/K&N/AFE ect ect all make a quality product - alot of the time it comes down to price for me - but thats on my own personal preference

Re: CAI Comparo
Taz did an excellent write up on his comparison with aFE CAI. I believe your post is the only other one that has offered to do as comprehensive. Face it, not everybody has the resources/time.
It would probably help your cause if you posted up where you are at, so the locals with TRD, K&N, AIRAID, aFE, etc. CAIs can link up with you are volunteer their rigs for the dyno runs.
Personally, I am interested to see how the AEM does. Are you doing this with their dry filter? I know they have dryfilters that fit other manufacturer's CAIs, so I watch with somewhat keen interest.

Yes, Taz had a great review, but it wasn't a side by side comparison in a scientifically controlled environment. I would like to take his writeup a step further.
The AEM has the new dry filter. It is supposed to be virtually maintanance free.
As for all CAI's to be virtually the same, we will have to see I guess. On our race car, there was considerable difference in different brands of intakes and AEM actually came out with a second version based on what was learned on the dyno. Intakes' are very precisely engineered pieces of equipment and a lot of power can be had/lost based on the length of the tube, etc. because the airflow goes through a series of harmonics at different RPM's and that is what makes most of the power. Depending on where in the RPM range the harmonics occur, determines whether or not you only get the 1st degree harmonics, 1st and 2nd or 3 degrees. Most likely in our cars we will get 1st and 2nd if the 1st takes place at a low enough RPM. The tube itself is fairly short though and this might mean that we only get one order of harmonics but thats why we need the dyno....
Anyway, I am located in Los Angeles and I am open to different ideas on how to disburse the cost of the dyno day which is probably going to cost close to a grand.
I am not interested in other cars with the mods on, however because I am going to compare *one* car with different mods in the *same* conditions.
This sounds like an excellent idea, and you already sound like you know what you are doing. I would just like to add the following ideas/thoughts.
I assume you will do all dynos on the same day, including the baseline. So often you see people run a baseline one day and go back a few months later to be disappointed with "low" readings because they don't realize that weather, humidity, and different dynos all affect readings. But again, I am pretty sure you already know this.
Mostly something for the noobs to read and think about
what if you sent back the intakes after the dyno day to the respective owners? I would kick in money for a dyno day fund to pay for the actual dyno itself, that way you wouldn't be out of any money. How much to rent the dyno for the day?

Depending on how many pulls we do. I plan on doing them all on the same day so everything is the same. Each set of pulls will probably be about 250 or so.
Anyway, I was thinking about doing this tomorrow...
