Exclamation Just changed oil. NOW BLACK SMOKE ON STARTUPS!!!

I just changed my oil @ 5,000 miles over to Amsoil which I've used in all of my vehicles and then drove 6hrs to moab and back and now every morning when I go out to start my cruiser, It blows black carbon. Right at startup and then when I rev it 5 or six times. Could it mean that the valve seats aren't seated all the way still and I need to go back to 5w-30 instead of Amsoils stright 30w full synthetic?

Re: Just changed oil. NOW BLACK SMOKE ON STARTUPS!!!

I always changed my own oil in all my cars. So I switched my FJ to Mobil 1 at 850 miles. The only thing I don't like is the way the dipstick turns to go into the oil pan and seems to smear oil up over the high mark on the way in/out. Could only get a reading on the side turned upwards that was even close. So I was worried I had too much oil in it after trying to tell by the stick a few dozen times. Back under it I go to pry the little trap door out and drain a little out. Then it reads low on the one side. So I added till it brings it up again. But that's all I have to gripe about mine seems to not blow smoke just I was getting a better reading on the oil with whatever came in it.

Hmmm... I don't how it could be an oil-related problem. Oil smoke is blue/gray and smells like oil. Black smoke is too much gasoline (rich mixture). I would say it sounds like the cold-start injector, but the 1GR-FE doesn't have one. Does it run any differently than it did before? How much black carbon is it? Is it possible that it has always been doing it and you just now noticed it?

I've been told using straight 30W is a no no with the VVT motor. If it was my FJ I'd dump the oil and save it a jug then refill with 5W30 dino oil and see if the smoke goes away.

Re: Just changed oil. NOW BLACK SMOKE ON STARTUPS!!!

Black smoke and carbon build up is usually a rich fuel mixture and a possible sign of fuel not being completely burned - check your ignition/plug wires and fuel/air intake system components. Burning oil would make you look like a MIG that just got shot down in a dog fight - grey heavy smoke. White smoke would be cooling system leak like a head gasket, etc.

5/30 is the correct grade of oil to use.

Nope, it just started. It puffs right at startup and then everytime I rev it up for about 5 or 6 good revs. The smoke is pretty black which made me think that it is running rich but I was giving it the benefit of the doubt of not having an EFI problem.
