Spec Aftermarket Clutch

Twice last winter out playing I smelled a burning and it smelled like a clutch but no slippage.

I called everyone, no one that I could find made a aftermarket clutch for any of the newer Toyota trucks.

A few months ago I started working with SPEC, what a great company!
I told them I wanted a after market clutch for the FJ they said sure send me a new one and we will make anything you like.

I sent them a new clutch and pressure plate, and 2 weeks later I have a Stage 3 Plus The Stage 3+ features a streetable high clamp pressure plate and full face carbon semi-metallic disc. Listed as an upgrade to the stage 3, it offers torque capacities more comparable to the stage 5 but with drivability equal to, and in some cases better than, the stage 3. The high capacity and excellent drivability characteristics of this clutch is a result of years of research and development for this SPEC exclusive disc compound.

I had dropped it off two weeks ago and picked it up yesterday when I returned from LA, my buddy goes your going to be happy with the way it drives.

The first two photos on the left are the stock parts the ones on the right are the aftermarket.

It was pretty jerky, I called spec and they said sorry we forgot to put the instructions in since I had the first one they made, requires a 500 mile break in, I am 150 and it is much better.

Jeff:
Is the price for the SPEC clutch comparable to the factory one?

Sweet. Nice to have an option. Is it alot more than the stock one?
How is the SPEC one better? Can you explain.

Re: Spec Aftermarket Clutch

I had the burning thing in the snow happen too

Slight Burning Smell While Pulling Through Snow - Any Worry?

I'm sure all 4 wheels resisting the clutch as opposed to one or two that can slip make it easier to burn the clutch. Spec clutch is probably gonna last your forever, Jeff

IMHO - since the stock had a burning smell when under extreme load I knew that after adding a S/C and lower gears that a aftermarket clutch and pressure plate would be needed (IMHO)

So since the TRD S/C has not hit the streets I figured might as well get a new clutch installed to kill time, I also wasn't sure since this was the first one and I was ready to try different stages if needed.

Drastically different materials and lots of increase pressure from the pressure plate, but still offers daily driving feel.

This is taken directly from the marlin crawler page

When organic clutches heat up they quickly loose the ability to absorb heat. At that time, the fabric on the clutch begins to be polished and its frictional coefficient is reduced. Ceramic clutches have a higher heat tolerance and actually increase friction as they warm up. Ceramic clutches last longer and will outlive organic clutches. Since these disks are "pucked", they have a lower mass and have the potential to spin at much faster RPMs with out disintegrating.

I did not go with a ceramic clutch as the full carbon semi metalic seems to have a better track record and a much longer lifespan.

I think around 700 for clutch and pressure plate.

I sent them a new clutch and plate and they sent me the new products and only charged me 400.00

The normal stage 3 + is 659 plus shipping.

Re: Spec Aftermarket Clutch

Thanks for the SPEC link! I sent them an e-mail and will patiently wait for a response from them...If I can get them to make me one I'm sure I can get my dealer to give me the new clutch so that I can send it to SPEC for the upgrade.
I hope this works! Other alternative : there's a performance shop that is distributor of SPEC products literally one street corner from my office...that'll be the 2nd option.

Re: Spec Aftermarket Clutch

Gonna have to book mark this page, for when my clutch goes out. I have smellt it a few times, mostly when using reverse.
Cruisin, let us know if they still make it for the FJ..I didn't see it listed on their site.
