If you're going offroad; Rock rails. Period.

100% correct! Tires & a lift are right behind and most of the rest are pretty & cool (provided you are going out with others who have ropes, jax, & winches...). Keep your eye open to this board, I got the Toy rails for $200 on this forum and despite everyone's opinions on better (& way more spendy)versions these one will hold up (Tellico tested by me personally). Re: whats the best bang for the buck mod?

Rock rails/sliders are numero uno, if you are talking about going offroad. A lift and tires will get you into more trouble, if you don't have "protection" first. Then after a lift and tires, you'll still find that your front bumper clearance could be better and you'll want to look for more credit card applications.

Re: whats the best bang for the buck mod?

I'm going to go in a different direction with this one. I have over $10,000 in mods added to my FJ. Whenever anyone asks what I like most the answer is always the same. The GPS. I have the Lowrance Baja 450c. Large screen, color, Toppo information, and Bread crumbing features make this my fav mod for around $600.00 with software. The Fj is a really good wheeler stock, but if you really want to get out of bounds there's nothing like knowing exactly where you are and where youv'e been. Everything else will fall into place.
