Question Changing Rear Diff. Fluid??

I have been in a good amount off deep water in the FJ and would like to change out the rear Diff. fluid to synthetic. I am going to be doing the scuba driver mod this weekend so I figured I would change out the fluid while down there.
I couldn't find anything about doing this on a search, so I figured I would just ask. I also want to make sure I do everything right instead of asking later "why did this happen" . So if someone could please just give me a quick rundown of the procedure and a good synthetic diff. fluid to use, that would be great.

Thanks,
CtheP

Re: Changing Rear Diff. Fluid??

You drain the oil, then fill it up until it dribbles out!

But seriously folks, I would like to know the wrench size/type for the fill & drain (because I'm too lazy to look @ the service manuals I downloaded).

BTW-That breather looks awfully CHEAP...it'sn't there a SECOND one on the diff? Where?

Re: Changing Rear Diff. Fluid??

No...just being a dumb ass!!

But I'm serious about being LAZY and planned on changing my diff oil this weekend!! Sorry if I came off the wrong way

ASnd I was serious about the second breather...I thought there was another one, but didn't see it when I quickly glanced under the truck last night. And I was in the dark with a crappy flashl;ight so I couldn't tell if the diff. drain plug was an allen wrench or regular spanner.

Re: Changing Rear Diff. Fluid??

Driveline service
Its for the 4runner but same procedure for the FJ, same platform. *Check the FJ manual for correct weights for fluids though*

Re: Changing Rear Diff. Fluid??

Thanks for the link daPitbull, and NYCTRD, in the 4x4 tech thread the first sticky is the scuba driver mod thread and it shows you where the e-Locker line is.

Thanks,
CtheP

1. Drive truck until fully warm.
2. Remove the fill and drain plugs with a six-point 24mm socket, catching fluid in a suitable container. Let it drain for a long time, gear oil is viscous.
3. Replace drain plug, using a new washer. Torque to 36 ft. lbs.
4. Pump or squeeze new Hypoid gear oil into fill hole until it runs out the bottom of the hole. It will take about 3 quarts, a little more if you don't have the locking diff.
5. Replace fill plug, using a new washer. Torque to 36 ft. lbs.

Any API GL-5 Hypoid gear oil will work. I use Amsoil full-synthetic Severe Gear 75w-90. I've used it for years in all my Land Cruisers and other cars/trucks. Mobil 1 75w-90 is also good.
