Rear Diff leak

Hello all,
I have a minor class III leak between the 3rd member and axle. I'm assuming I'd need to pull the axle shafts to pull the 3rd member out enough to reseal the mating surfaces. Is this correct? It's nothing major, but I have a new driveway I'm trying to keep clean.

FYI: Class I - Area is wet, but doesn't form a drop
Class II - Forms a drop, but doesn't hit the ground
Class III - Oil hits the ground.

Thanks!

Re: Rear Diff leak

Have you tried tightening the bolts first? I'd guess that won't solve the problem, but it's worth a shot before disassembly.

If you have to pull it....ya, you're on the right track. Pull the driveshaft, pull the rear tires, removed the axles (actually you just have to pull them out of the carrier a few inches) and then ubolt the third member. Might wanna give a good cleaning to the inside of the housing and gears while you got it out.....and look for any signs of problems (bad pattern, chipped teeth, etc.).

HTH,
Sean

Re: Rear Diff leak

I tried tightening first. No luck.

It is still under warranty. I would take it to the dealer, but I figured if I ever have to tear it apart on the trail, I'd like to know how it all comes apart before hand. A tube of RTV is only a couple of bucks, so all it costs me is a little time.

Believe me, if it was a ring and pinion, it would be at the dealer.

Thanks all!
