Mods to increase gas milage?

So for those of us who plan on having the FJ as a daily driver, what are some engine mods that can help improve milage a bit...even at the expense of a few ponies? I dont have an FJ yet, but am waiting for the '08 to come out.

Re: Mods to increase gas milage?

CAI = Cold Air Intake Small but it helps.

Drive under 75 when on the highway, This will be a huge gain for you. I have started to drive slower. I traded a G35 for my rig and I am now learning that if I am not in a hurry to take it easy.

If MPG are a concern don't get a lift or bigger tires.

Exhaust can help a bit as well. Depending on the exhust I would recommend a Y pipe over a exhust setup first.

If you're lookin' for gas mileage bugman then you're buying the wrong vehicle. This truck is built for power.

Keep your speed as low as you can on the highway. Optimun fuel economy with most vehicles, the FJ included, is 45-55 mph. When the speed limit is 60 I don't exceed 65. Every little bit helps. Also, limit those jackrabbit starts.

Correct.

The CAI and maybe a less restrictive exhaust system would help. Buy the two-wheel drive version. Otherwise no mods what so ever beyond upgrading the stereo. Leave the (less than cool looking) stock tires on it, no trail gear, no skids, no sliders, etc.

But if you're looking for great mileage in a commuting car, try a Prius. I'm not trying to be a jerk - it's just not designed to be a super fuel efficient commuter. 20 MPG isn't bad for a 4x4 with as much power and capability as a stock FJ - but you won't do much better than that.

Re: Mods to increase gas milage?

The best thing you can do for gas mileage is to practice throttle control. Anticipate situations where you will need to use your brakes and instead, just take your foot off the gas. Everytime you use your brakes, you are converting your hard earned gas to heat.

Re: Mods to increase gas milage?

As everyone has already said, just keep your foot out of the engine and the truck does pretty good for how non-aerodynamic it is, and for how much power the engine puts out.

I have a 4WD auto that is bone stock. I have also run cheap gas in it since day one. I have managed to squeak a couple 24 mpg tankfuls by doing 5 mph over the posted limit and avoiding jackrabbit starts at traffic lights.

I think the cold air intake would help a bit, but I don't like the idea of doing away with the factory snorkel.

1. Remove radiator cap from FJ Cruiser and suspend it in the garage.

2. Roll FJ Cruiser backwards and out of the way.

3. Roll in a Yaris or Prius (with open radiator) underneath the suspended radiator cap.

4. Intsall suspended radiator cap and drive away.

Re: Mods to increase gas milage?

As everyone else has said. This engine is a great piece of engineering. HP when you put your foot into it and mpg when you drive it lightly. Most everyone dirve somewhere in the middle portion of a bell curve. I have gotten 25 mpg twice and my average is 22.9 mpg on premium fuel. Everything else stock.

If mpg is what you want and you own an FJ, then drive it like you are in the middle of Death Valley with only 1 gallon of gas left in your tank and 30 miles of road ahead of you to safety. It works.
