TRD CAI Help

I did a search on this thing a while back, but cant find the info this time around. I want to know if the TRD CAI is truly worth the cash? I need specs on performance. It looks like the price may be climbing. I plan on purchasing a lift in the future, and if the performance gains from the CAI will be good enough to help offset the downgrade in MPG, I'll make the leap.

Re: TRD CAI Help

One way to justify the CAI partly is to subtract the cost of buying replacement throw away paper filters for the life of your vehicle.

There's no way an air filter is going to make up for the MPG loss of a lift and tires.

Re: TRD CAI Help

the TRD CAI is definitely worth it...I was worried a little how you are but I pulled the trigger and went with it..and I'm very glad I did. It's great...I mean it's not gonna turn it into a v-8 but it gives the FJ a scream when you get on it...and in theory..it will eventually pay for itself in MPG gain..now matter how small.

Re: TRD CAI Help

sound aside, how's the performance? I could buy a K&N filter for the stock air intake to avoid throwing away filters. I want better MPG and performance. Sound is good and all, but i need the meat and potatoes of it all.

If you are looking to offset the additional weight of a lift and tires/wheels, along with the effective gear ratio change from the larger tire rolling diameter, you'd best look somewhere other than a CAI, no matter who makes it or what they claim. And remember, even if you could add enough horsepower / torque to off set the loss from the additional stuff, most of it will end up dissipating in the drivetrain, adding stress to components already getting additional stress from the lift / tires... Re-gearing is the only wat to truely compensate for the additional load / stress... the trade off being additional expense, and weaker gears...

Re: TRD CAI Help

The stock system is a cold air intake, so just buy a K&N drop in filter and use the rest of your money for other cool stuff. The intake ports stays the same on any good CAI. You can also cut out the seccondary filter to give a bit more air flow. $40 is better than $300!

Re: TRD CAI Help

Im just looking for better MPG and HP/TRQ. I was just thinking that it may be worth the purchase if it offset the other add-ons.

Re: TRD CAI Help

Search a little harder on this forum and you will find just what you seek. You can even stay in this forum topic and find what you want. Try.

I bought the afe CAI and absolutly hated it. The sound was stupid loud and once I actually did the install I realized that the stock intake was 100% satisfactory and no CAI would be able to pay for itself during the time that I would own the vehicle. I plan on 200,000+ miles.

I pulled it after less than 100 miles and sold it.

I drive like a sane person and with mixed highway and city driving am averaging 22.8 MPG since I bought the truck (7,000ish miles). Highest was 24.7mpg. Considering my previous vehicle, a Land Rover D90, would get 15 mpg on a great day I'm very pleased with my FJ.

Oh yeah - NO WAY will the CAI make up a lift and larger tires. I'll bet you pinks on this.

You would need to spend a crapload to do what you want and that isnt worth it. Get a K&N filter and switch to Royal Purple at 10k miles. Go to the Royal Purple website and check out the videos for more info on hp/mpg gains. You can also search the forum about synthetics for more info. For best MPG use premium fuel, check your air pressure in your tires, keep your air filter clean and change your oil. Also if you go up in tire size and add bumpers and stuff your MPG will suffer.

If MPG is a worry.....buy a Saturn.
