Why do you need one? there is a fuel sock at the end of the fuel pump to prevent debris - to a certain point - in reaching your injectors.
you are fine.
I do a lot of remote driving in the Sierra Madre's in Mexico. Gas sometimes has to come from a 55-gallon barrel or out of five gallon gas cans being sold by locals...
Gas from U.S. service stations also contains a certain amount of trash. Especially if you are filling up while the fuel truck is filling the stations tanks or shortly thereafter.
A good, changeable filter is a must for use where there is a possibility of getting dirty gas.
cheers,
dale

How many modern fuel injected cars/trucks with returnless systems have servicable fuel filters? I know GM went to a "lifetime" fuel filter around 20003 or 2004
The standard for fuels now is quite high. However, it's also a good idea to save the credit card receipt for every fillup. That way if you do happen to get a load of trash, and the very expensive repair bill, you can prove you gassed up just before the problem started
Even if the fuel filter is external, if you gas up and get a lot of trash, you still have to drop the tank to clean it and replace the fuel pump. That could still be a huge repair bill
I had a 1990 4Runner and a 1992 Honda Prelude. Both had external fuel filters and a drain plug on the gas tank. Every fall I'd drain 5 gallons from each tank. You'd be surprised at the sediment that came out
I really miss metal tanks with drain plugs. Just being able to drain water and sediment once a year makes a huge difference, or at least it did back then. I'm hoping gas is cleaner now.
That said, I haven't recently heard of anybody having trouble with bad gas. Last time was around 1994 or so, a person had stopped at a remote rural gas station and got a lot of water/dirt in the gas. The underground tanks must have been leaking

You can purchase special funnels with very fine screens or filters built in. In your case, I would be concerned about dirt/water in the gas

Yep, I have a funnel that I use with my tractor that has the fine screen that will even trap water.
Seems to me that someone should make a similar screen to go in the filler neck of the FJ. That would trap the crap before it enters the tank. Hey, I've even named it... a crap trap...
cheers,

I checked at Summit Racing and they offer a funnel with a replaceable 60 micron filter screen
I have a New Holland diesel tractor at my hobby farm. I strongly recommend a cartridge filter on the tank pump, capable of removing water and sediment down to 5 microns.
The filter heads are easily available in 3/4 and 1 inch npt, and accept a variety of spin on filters. I've used Purolator and Donaldson spin-on filters, they even have a drain valve at the bottom to drain the excess water and sediment.
I picked up both the filter head and the filters at Princess Auto in Winnipeg. Here, they're well known for having a good assortment of specialty and surplus parts.
