My Throwout Bearing Isssue in Detail

09-12-2007
Well, for at least six months now (or so), my
throw out bearing has been chirping, getting
louder and more irratating each day... IT GOT
LOUDER... Sort of like camping, and ya' hear
all the frogs and such... Like that... Some
people may think it's the pully too... Hard
to tell the sound apart... Only difference is,
when you press the clutch, it goes away...
I only heard of 2 others with the same thing...

So I had stopped by the Toyo dealer by my
work (gateway toyota toms river) and talked
to them a feew months ago, and they said I
would need to leave it there so they could
check it out even tho I told them the chirp
goes away as soon as you depress the clutch
a half inch or more... So I held off for a while,
a hate anyone screwin' with my rig anyway...

SO, I got off to work a little early today, and
decided to stop by again, the chirping jus' plain
suckers'... I went and saw the same girl at the
desk again (she is very nice btw) and said, I
need to make an apointment for this, but I
wanted them to pre-order the bearing, so I
only have to drop it off once... She again,
was hesitant...

Then I rememberd that maybe, an old friend of
mine from my racin' days in the 80's and 90's,
just might work there still.. So I asked if he was
there or not, She Smiled and said she'd be right
Back... He was still there, came out to the FJ
with me and imediatly said, yup, throw out
bearing, no problem, I'll have her order the part
ahead of time...

I went back in and the girl said she would give
me a veh. to drive for a couple of days when it
is in the shop... Sweet Deal, At least I know
now that if I have any trobles in the next 5
years, I have somewhere to go without the
headaches of fighten' the warranty issues...
I did also mention the buldge/crack issue, and
he said he has yet to hear about it there...
Anyway... More when I get the call to drop it
off...

My bearing has been noisy since I got the FJ, I
could here a roaring sound when the peddle was
released, then is progressed to a intermitant chirp,
then to a steady chirp, to where now I can here
it driving down the road over the sound of my
swampers and flowmaster 40series... I believe it
was just a bad apple... I only read of maybe two
others that have had this other then myself, So
I wouldn't worry about it...

update:
Mrs Rose from Toyo called me this morning, and
said "your partis in, when do you want to drop
it off"... I said, "WOW, that was fast, well, I know
it will take prolly more then one day and I need my
ride on the weekend", She replied, "How about this
afternoon, and I do have a car here for you to use,
and I will double check the time frame and get back
to you"... WOW...

undate2:
Got a call back... I bring it in the morning, get my
loaner', and get the FJ back at five...
at 5pm..

09-14-2007
Update:
Droped it off to Cheri Rose (Yesss, I said Cherry)...
I had to double check I was in the right place, and
then ask if I get a happy ending or not...

I was in and out of there in 5-10 min... They gave
me the keys to the loaner and they said it should
be done by 5pm... Schweet........

09-15-2007
update:
As I said, I Droped it off on friday morn at 7:30am,
they gave me a loner to get to work, FJ was done
at 3pm...

WOW is it quiet now... And VERY quik turnaround !...
ps: Happy Endings are not Covered by Warranty !!...

As far my symtoms go, Mine would come and go,
till it was there almost all the time... I had the
dealer change it, and a day ago, I was checking
my tire air pressure and I heard a chirping sound
again, I was like no f'ing way, so i got in, pressed
the clutch about an inch, bam Gone.. Let it out
again, chirp chirp chirp.... NOW either it is something
else in there, or the actually guy that did the
bearing replacement pocketed the bearing and shot
mine with wd40.. so now, I have to go back again
when it is chirping continiously again...

10-25-2007
OK...Here we go again... I Have Squeaking again...
I Stoped by the dealer before the OBX trip last
weekend, and talked to my buddy there and I told
him the only thing I thought would cause the bearing
to fail that I know of would be the pressure plate
having some bad fingers that would give uneven
pressure and cause the bearing to be unevenly
seated... He said that toyota would not warranty
the clutch setup, but he would call Cali HQ and
let me know...

Got a call from the dealer, Said my Parts are in ?...
Hmm... What Parts ?... So I stopped by, and the
service lady said yes the parts are here, and they
needed to set up an appointment...

It turns out, HQ said to replace everything , so a
new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and
shift fork... That should fix whatever it is that is
causing the bearing to go bad...

I drop it off tuesday, and get loner again...

10-30-2007
Got to the Dealer and got an apology LOL... Everthing
but the shift fork came in, so I wait some more... No
Biggie... I will wait...

Side note, DO YOU HAVE THE SQUEAK / CHIRP ?

Easy to Check, Just start er' up, PUT ON E-BRAKE,
listen under the vehicle and Have Miss Busty step
on the clutch, then let it off, while it is off, you
will here a CHIRP-CHIRP-CHIRP non stop, then as
soon as you have er' step on the clutch (just needs
to move a 1/2" or so, it will go away instantly... If
it were real bad, you would know it really... VEH.
NEED NOT BE IN GEAR for you to hear the throwout
bearing...

Shift Fork is in and I dropped the FJ off this morning
to get everything replaced... I told the Service Rep
I would like to see the parts once the were removed...

They call around 10am and had me drive down to
take a look, and the clutch and pressure plate are
the standard toyota setup, but they did show some
signs of burning/glazing, which I attribute to the FJ
being AWD...

While I was there, the factory rep was there to look
into the bearing issue, so I guess toyota is aware of
a problem with the throwout bearings on the MT's...
He asked a few questions, but before I could ask him
too much, the wisked me away...

anyway... More later when I find out whats up !...

I will keep an ear open for mine. But so far I haven't had any issues with my clutch assembly.

Hopefully yours is fixed with this new assembly.

While reading this thread I got a call from my dealer that my FJ is ready for pick up. This is the second time that they have replaced the throw out bearing. This time they also replaced the shift fork and the shaft that goes through the bearing was warn and needed to be replace. Because of having to order additional part my FJ has been at the dealer for a week. No loaner for me.

I hope Toyota is aware of the problem and has a fix planned because I don't want to be back in a few months getting this repaired again.

update:
Arrgg... Just got a call, that they may need
to ORDER a new flywheel... I'll post BACK as
soon a I hear something... I HOPE THEY HAVE
A CAR...

OK... No Car, they are all out to other customers...
But the Flywheel had to be ordered and will be in
tomorrow and the work will be completed, and they
will have a car held for me tomorrow...

I did get a look at the parts after they removed
them, and the pressure plate and flywheel looked
pitted and glazed... Maybe this is a known issue,
I kinda remember someone here mentioning the
same thing on the flywheel or simular... Could be
why the factory rep was there also... Update to
follow...

Thanks for the Info Sandi'...

Oh yeaa, please hit the pole at the top... ;)...

I just started driving the FJ everyday while the Tacoma is in the body shop. My clutch only disengages about 1 inch on the top of the pedal. I really don't remember having to let out six inches of travel before engaging the clutch. Anyone else have this?
I believe mine and the wifes FJ's are more to
the middle of the throw AL', I will check for
sure when I get mine back from the dealer
today... hopefuly TODAY...

Ah this sucks. Took mine in for service on what I thought would be the idler pulleys. The guy there was real nice and a member of TTORA. He replaced the belt and thought that was the source of the problem. Well it was quiet on the ride back home, but when I went out again I heard it. Took it back and it turns out that the throwout bearing is the source of the problem. Experience the same thing you did Bandi. Push in the clutch and it goes away. Well I'm in Houston and about to head back to Michigan so they couldn't do the service. They offered up a loaner FJ, but after telling him of my situation he didn't want me to get stuck in Houston.

Will have it looked at in Georgia.

#14 ·
Well, tht suckers', to do tht work on it, jut to
find another squeak...

After the last switch out of parts on My Fj, it
is still Squeak free... :D...

#15 ·
I'm certain my throwout bearing is going out too. It only chirps after long trips though. Wonder why? I took it in to the dealer and they said most like its the problem, but they could not replace it unless they could duplicate the problem. When it finally goes what should they replace? The flywheel, clutch, fork, and bearing?

#16 ·
On mine, the did the TO bearing only, it then
came back within two weeks... They then were
going to look at what could cause the un-even
pressure on the TO bearing to cause it to fail...

So the shift fork (bent at the factory poss') and
pressure plate (uneven finger pressure) were the
mosy likely culprits, but in changing just those
two items, you now have a chance of a squeak
between the new pressuer plate and old clutch
plate...

When they pulled the pressure plate, the plate
and the flywheel both showed some glazing and
pitting, so rather than risk another squeak and
having to pull the trans' again, they just replaced
everything at once and it's been fine ever since !...

#17 ·
good info, I will suggest that they replace the **** fork and pressure plate while they are at it.

It's odd to me that a new vehicle on a supposedly proven platform should have this issue at all. Anyone know if off-roading it or driving it through water or some kind of abuse can ruin a TO bearing?

#19 ·
I dropped my FJ off at the dealer today. They will replace the T/O bearing but not the pressure plate, shift fork, or clutch. Hopefully nothing else is bad causing the problem. My warranty is out in about 10,000 miles so It would be out of my pocket if it fails again. Goodnews is my loaner is a Prius--I'll be reducing my carbon footprint at least for a few days.

Hello Folks,

I was waiting to post until I understood the complete problem and resolution, but I am now unsure as to what the outcome will be, so here goes:

I brought my MT FJ (with 29k miles) in last month with a “chirping” TO bearing as described in this thread. The dealer changed only the TO bearing. The day I received my FJ back, I noticed a new and different grinding noise. It was a very low volume sound, and at the time loudest as the drive train wound down (as in between shifting), but also audible the entire drive back to the dealership.

As a result the dealer changed my entire clutch assembly and since the tech stated that the old TO bearing scored the pilot shaft, I received a new Transmission…not just the bell housing, but the whole thing.

As a side note, the tech mentioned that the new replacement clutch was slightly different than the original, as in possibly redesigned to address this issue?

The problem is, the grinding noise is still there. Since they were stumped I agreed to drive my FJ for awhile to see if the problem would vet itself out (Hey, it is still under warranty, so I figured why not).

Unfortunately the grinding noise is intermittent, and to date I have not been able to reproduce it for the dealer. My performance does not seem to be affected at all.

But the fact is that the sound was not there before the TO bearing was replaced.

#23 ·
So I was able to reproduce the noise for the dealer's service department. Turned out to be easy: Accelerate in low gear (2nd or 3rd) until 4500-5000 RPM, and take the foot of the gas and let her coast in gear. Clatter-Clatter-Clatter.

Turned out that the clutch was not installed correctly.

I have an 2007 FJ Cruiser that has the t/o bearing chirp. I purchased this rig 2 months ago. I am right around 25,000 miles. I also have an unusual issue with wet seat belts. Every time it rains you get in and put on your seatbelt and they are soaking wet (front driver and passenger only). I took to the dealership in Boulder, CO and this is a known issue. They are going to replace the seals around the suicide dorrs under warranty. It sounds like I have a journey to go through to get the "chirping" sound to go away, as well.

#25 ·
My chirp is back.

I have 2500 miles still under warranty, so it's time to make an appointment...

#26 ·
I finally got mine in today. They lubed the bearing shaft. I was told it had no lubricant on it. We'll see...seems fishy and it still squeeks just a bit.

I'll finish the poll when I give up trying to get it fixed or it IS fixed.

60k or so for the drivetrain... I am thinking of
replacing mine in the next week or so myself...
Damn' bearing list for $160 with my cost at $94,
ouch... I need to replace a few seals too that
are seeping... The T/O bearing seems to handle
water like the serp' belt pullies, if they even see
water, they squeak !...

#30 ·
UPDATE:
They replaced these parts:
31230-60240 Bearing assy, clutch
31236-60060 Support, Release for
31204-35060 Fork Sub-assy, clutc
90119-08134 Bolt, W/Washer

I'll update again if it comes back. How long do you think I should give it?

#34 ·
For me, it was back after ~ 13K miles.

I took mine in for assessment yesterday. As expected, they're replacing the whole d*mn assembly again, once the parts are in.

Ugh. If I have to have the TO bearing and assembly changed every 15K miles, I'm selling it. That's ridiculous.

:flame:

^^^ Hopefuly it will not come back for you at all...

Mine lasted after they changed out everything like
you listed, well, till about a year ago when it came
back...

This is the same problem I had with my wifes 2001 Echo at 17000 miles. we ended up going through the same proscess. We had a place called Computer Tune and and screw ooops, Lube do the clutch replacement at 30000. The nose stared up again the first day and the car was real hard to get into gear. We brought it back and they did it all over again. The transmission fell out of the car about ten months later what a mess. They ended up paying for the transmission after fighting with them for a month but the car still has shifting problems.

My 2002 Tacoma started the same noise at 30000. I brought it in a few times to Hartford Toyota but it wouldn't make the nose there. It made the noise when I got home though. I finaly got fed up and took it in just for that and had them bleed the clutch master cylinder and rlace the fluid. I was like there is no way the throw out bearing is gone yet. I drove the truck like an old man. I blew the throw out bearing in my 1990 Toyota pick up at 45000 but I was power shifting it and it made the noise all the time.

Hartford Toyota also greased someting but it was hard for the guy to explain what the teck told him he did, but it sounds like they got in to it or greased the fork. I drove that truck 20000 more miles and only heard the sound two more times but it went away.

Hope this helps anyone else in the same situation and don't power shift it.
