My Throwout Bearing Isssue in Detail
09-12-2007
Well, for at least six months now (or so), my
throw out bearing has been chirping, getting
louder and more irratating each day... IT GOT
LOUDER... Sort of like camping, and ya' hear
all the frogs and such... Like that... Some
people may think it's the pully too... Hard
to tell the sound apart... Only difference is,
when you press the clutch, it goes away...
I only heard of 2 others with the same thing...
So I had stopped by the Toyo dealer by my
work (gateway toyota toms river) and talked
to them a feew months ago, and they said I
would need to leave it there so they could
check it out even tho I told them the chirp
goes away as soon as you depress the clutch
a half inch or more... So I held off for a while,
a hate anyone screwin' with my rig anyway...
SO, I got off to work a little early today, and
decided to stop by again, the chirping jus' plain
suckers'... I went and saw the same girl at the
desk again (she is very nice btw) and said, I
need to make an apointment for this, but I
wanted them to pre-order the bearing, so I
only have to drop it off once... She again,
was hesitant...
Then I rememberd that maybe, an old friend of
mine from my racin' days in the 80's and 90's,
just might work there still.. So I asked if he was
there or not, She Smiled and said she'd be right
Back... He was still there, came out to the FJ
with me and imediatly said, yup, throw out
bearing, no problem, I'll have her order the part
ahead of time...
I went back in and the girl said she would give
me a veh. to drive for a couple of days when it
is in the shop... Sweet Deal, At least I know
now that if I have any trobles in the next 5
years, I have somewhere to go without the
headaches of fighten' the warranty issues...
I did also mention the buldge/crack issue, and
he said he has yet to hear about it there...
Anyway... More when I get the call to drop it
off...
My bearing has been noisy since I got the FJ, I
could here a roaring sound when the peddle was
released, then is progressed to a intermitant chirp,
then to a steady chirp, to where now I can here
it driving down the road over the sound of my
swampers and flowmaster 40series... I believe it
was just a bad apple... I only read of maybe two
others that have had this other then myself, So
I wouldn't worry about it...

update:
Mrs Rose from Toyo called me this morning, and
said "your partis in, when do you want to drop
it off"... I said, "WOW, that was fast, well, I know
it will take prolly more then one day and I need my
ride on the weekend", She replied, "How about this
afternoon, and I do have a car here for you to use,
and I will double check the time frame and get back
to you"... WOW...
undate2:
Got a call back... I bring it in the morning, get my
loaner', and get the FJ back at five...
at 5pm..

Update:
Droped it off to Cheri Rose (Yesss, I said Cherry)...
I had to double check I was in the right place, and
then ask if I get a happy ending or not...
I was in and out of there in 5-10 min... They gave
me the keys to the loaner and they said it should
be done by 5pm... Schweet........

update:
As I said, I Droped it off on friday morn at 7:30am,
they gave me a loner to get to work, FJ was done
at 3pm...
WOW is it quiet now... And VERY quik turnaround !...
ps: Happy Endings are not Covered by Warranty !!...
As far my symtoms go, Mine would come and go,
till it was there almost all the time... I had the
dealer change it, and a day ago, I was checking
my tire air pressure and I heard a chirping sound
again, I was like no f'ing way, so i got in, pressed
the clutch about an inch, bam Gone.. Let it out
again, chirp chirp chirp.... NOW either it is something
else in there, or the actually guy that did the
bearing replacement pocketed the bearing and shot
mine with wd40.. so now, I have to go back again
when it is chirping continiously again...
10-25-2007
OK...Here we go again... I Have Squeaking again...
I Stoped by the dealer before the OBX trip last
weekend, and talked to my buddy there and I told
him the only thing I thought would cause the bearing
to fail that I know of would be the pressure plate
having some bad fingers that would give uneven
pressure and cause the bearing to be unevenly
seated... He said that toyota would not warranty
the clutch setup, but he would call Cali HQ and
let me know...
Got a call from the dealer, Said my Parts are in ?...
Hmm... What Parts ?... So I stopped by, and the
service lady said yes the parts are here, and they
needed to set up an appointment...
It turns out, HQ said to replace everything , so a
new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and
shift fork... That should fix whatever it is that is
causing the bearing to go bad...
I drop it off tuesday, and get loner again...
10-30-2007
Got to the Dealer and got an apology LOL... Everthing
but the shift fork came in, so I wait some more... No
Biggie... I will wait...
Side note, DO YOU HAVE THE SQUEAK / CHIRP ?
Easy to Check, Just start er' up, PUT ON E-BRAKE,
listen under the vehicle and Have Miss Busty step
on the clutch, then let it off, while it is off, you
will here a CHIRP-CHIRP-CHIRP non stop, then as
soon as you have er' step on the clutch (just needs
to move a 1/2" or so, it will go away instantly... If
it were real bad, you would know it really... VEH.
NEED NOT BE IN GEAR for you to hear the throwout
bearing...
12-13-2007
Shift Fork is in and I dropped the FJ off this morning
to get everything replaced... I told the Service Rep
I would like to see the parts once the were removed...
They call around 10am and had me drive down to
take a look, and the clutch and pressure plate are
the standard toyota setup, but they did show some
signs of burning/glazing, which I attribute to the FJ
being AWD...
While I was there, the factory rep was there to look
into the bearing issue, so I guess toyota is aware of
a problem with the throwout bearings on the MT's...
He asked a few questions, but before I could ask him
too much, the wisked me away...
anyway... More later when I find out whats up !...
I will keep an ear open for mine. But so far I haven't had any issues with my clutch assembly.
Hopefully yours is fixed with this new assembly.

While reading this thread I got a call from my dealer that my FJ is ready for pick up. This is the second time that they have replaced the throw out bearing. This time they also replaced the shift fork and the shaft that goes through the bearing was warn and needed to be replace. Because of having to order additional part my FJ has been at the dealer for a week. No loaner for me.
I hope Toyota is aware of the problem and has a fix planned because I don't want to be back in a few months getting this repaired again.

OK... No Car, they are all out to other customers...
But the Flywheel had to be ordered and will be in
tomorrow and the work will be completed, and they
will have a car held for me tomorrow...
I did get a look at the parts after they removed
them, and the pressure plate and flywheel looked
pitted and glazed... Maybe this is a known issue,
I kinda remember someone here mentioning the
same thing on the flywheel or simular... Could be
why the factory rep was there also... Update to
follow...
I just started driving the FJ everyday while the Tacoma is in the body shop. My clutch only disengages about 1 inch on the top of the pedal. I really don't remember having to let out six inches of travel before engaging the clutch. Anyone else have this?
Yep, mine was replaced at 20K miles in September...
Sandi
Thanks for the Info Sandi'...
Oh yeaa, please hit the pole at the top... ...
