When to switch to synthetic?

The Fj is my first new vehicle (besides sportbikes). When is the Fj considered broke in? I want to switch to synthetic, but I know synthetic can halt proper breakin and end up costing horsepower if switched too soon. Any ideas? 3,000......5,0000 miles?

Re: When to switch to synthetic?

Good question! I just changed my oil for the first time today (1500 miles) and I did not use synthetic either. I'm thinking of changing over to synthetic at the first 5000 mile oil change that Toyota recommends.

Re: When to switch to synthetic?

Yeah, on my 07' kawasaki zx-6r, kawa says 600 miles for break in, but I waited until 1,200 to switch . I'm only at 2,000 on the fj, so I might wait until the 5,000 mile mark with one reg. oil change in between...

Re: When to switch to synthetic?

There are many, many threads on this topic and your going to get answers all over the board on this question. The bottom line. Change it over anytime you want. You can't hurt it.

I changed to synthetic at 5000 miles, but you can switch any time.

Re: When to switch to synthetic?

Actually, you can't switch at anytime. Rings take time to properly seat. Synthetic oil is so slick that it won't allow the wear that needs to take place for that to happen. Switching too soon can result in an weak motor with way less power than it's supposed to have. I've seen motorcycles switched to soon that have 10% or so LESS horsepower than properly broken in bikes that were switched later. I'll wait till 5,000 just to be safe. I live in the mountains, so I've gone through a bunch of load cycles, rpm ranges, etc. Should be broken in right.

I have to ask the question why do many new vehicles come with synthetic oil from the factory then? Never heard of any issues with these vehicles motors...

That's a good question! Maybe they break the engines in some how before they fill them up with synthetic oil and install them in the cars? Or maybe the whole wait till the engine is broke in thing is just nonsense? I sure don't know the answer.

Re: When to switch to synthetic?

I read somewhere, maybe in a related post, that the engine breakin period is really not a big deal with modern engines. Everything is so precisely machined and assembled that there isn't much breaking it to do. I would imagine that this is the reason the cars you listed come with synthetic. The FJ came with regular oil, so that is what I ran for the first 5,000mi. Then I switched to full synthetic everything. My rear diff fluid was perfectly clean at 7,000mi which surprised me because of everything I read on here about the black rear diff fluid.
