Black smoke and carbon build-up

Hey everyone

For about a week or so, maybe longer not sure, whenever i start up the truck I get some black smoke out the exhaust. It takes a couple of revs before it stops. I am not sure if it continues while I am driving, don't think so. I haven't done anything different, I use 93 Oct gas and changed my oil at 3K, now at 5,500K. I also noticed that tons of carbon build up against the tip of the exhaust. What's up with that, I don't notice that in other cars. I am taking it in the dealer tomorrow to get my oil change and ask them about it. Any idea???

I know black is for Rich mixture, not exactly sure what that is.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a lot more then normal carbon build up. I do not get black smoke however.

Re: Black smoke and carbon build-up

I recently noticed the inside of my tail pipe is black and almost oily. I run 93 octane and drive mostly highway 60 miles daily, I am at 17,000 miles with oil changes every 3,000. My other cars always had a dry light brown powder except when my Suburban had over 200,000 it was oily like this before I rebuilt the engine (valve guides were worn). I am using no additional oil between changes. Maybe we should start a "What color is your tail pipe" poll

I don't think it has anything to do with altitude, mine is black as well, but no smoke as far as I can tell.

Re: Black smoke and carbon build-up

I had mine at the dealership back in January (20,000 miles) for this, black smoke on start up and lots of carbon in tail pipe. They said they checked every thing out and that it is running fine.

Re: Black smoke and carbon build-up

It's just the cold start circuit in the fuel injection. Like most modern gasoline engines the 1GR-FE runs pretty lean for emissions and fuel economy. Lean enough that it wouldn't start easy or run for sh!t until it is fully warm, so it meters extra gas when cold. Nothing to worry about. When you change your plugs at 30,000 miles you will not see any carbon at all.

Re: Black smoke and carbon build-up

Might be a bit of unburned fuel/carbon deposits sitting in the cats. Cats are not fully effective until they reach a certain operating temp. I get a little puff now and then but at operating temp everything is fine.
