Help! Swerve, ABS, VSC Off Lights came on!

I read in a few places that these lights have popped on because of rats...well I am in Valencia, CA and I doubt there are any rats around...But I did check the engine compartment...no pee, no prints, no evidence of chewing...

I do have to get an oil change, that is why my Maintenance light is on...came on right at the mileage they wrote on my "oil change window sticker".

Any idea what it could be? I wanted to take it to a dealer, but the service guy is telling me it is $92 to check out. I asked about warranty and he said... "If the work I find is covered under warranty then it is covered, if through searching the work needed to be done is not under warranty then I will have to charge you $92".

Well I know there are a wealth of members on here that know more about these than anyone... what should I do? What should I look into?

I have a VSC cancel switch as well...but that is turned off (when it is on, my e-brake indicator stays on even when the e-brake is down).

Thanks for any help
Matt

Re: Help! Swerve, ABS, VSC Off Lights came on!

It's free to try... just check your gasoline cap to be sure it's on nice and tight. Then, you might need to reset the onboard computer too. If so, disconnect the neg. cable from the battery for 5-10 minutes, and it should reset. Hopefully, your lights will stay off afterwards.

If you have a scangage, you could just reset without disconnecting the battery, so you wouldn't need to re-enter your radio stations, etc. due to loss of memory power.

I'm sure others will have thoughts, too. There have been many threads on the lights coming on, from various causes, many of which are the gas cap.

Good luck... Ron

Thanks rons, the gas cap would cause the ABS lights and traction control lights to pop on??? I will check it out...I hope that is it...because now that I think about it, they came on after my last fill up. I will reset my computer as well...

No scan guage though, but I have a Z2 so no stations will be lost.

Thanks! I am going to check now!

I'm just spitballing here, but it is possible you have a dirty wheel sensor or disconnected sensor or broken wire.

All 3 indicator lights have to do with wheel slip. I am ignoring the maint. req'd light since I think you answered your own question.

When the lemon did that...it was a bad wheel sensor on the left rear tire.....

It's not likely rats. If it is an intermittent sensor, it will reset every time you restart the car - the VSC / skid control system rechecks itself every time you start the vehicle, and they do not clear with a scangauge, which works only on OBD II diagnostic codes. You can try engaging 4wd / 4wd low and back a couple of times, then restart and see if the lights go off.
Other possibilities, aside from the wheel sensors for the abs, is the transfer case engagement sensor, and the 4wd module on the front axle.

It is most likely something covered under warranty, so I'd check with the dealer if the lights do not reset as above. If you are using Frontier Toyota, ask for Jimmy, the Service Shop Foreman, or Richard Newman, the Service Manager - both are nice, reasonable guys...

Thanks Larry for the insite. I got an oil change so the maint light is out. Still have the yellow lights though. I will try the 4wd thing tomorrow when I find some dirt. I want to take it to the dealer, but if they do end up charging me 92...I wont be happy...mostly because I really can't afford it at the moment.

Think its safe to go wheeling in gorman still?

If you take it back and he sees that "VSC cancel switch" do you think that might be a problem warranting the electrical system?

No, its not - both functionally, and financially, IMO.

Technically, it's not safe to drive at all. If the indicator lights are accurate, than some important safety systems are not functioning correctly, which could cause major problems in an emergency situation. It is very likely your 4wd system will not activate correctly while those indicators are illuminated - the 4wd computer interfaces with the main ECU and may not work when the ABS system is not working properly.

And not to be critical, but if you can't afford a possible $92 charge to check the reason a major safety system is not functioning correctly, how can you afford to risk damage to the vehicle and risk on the freeway getting there, both of which could be substantially more expensive, in many ways....

You will only get charged $92 if its not warranty related. Be forceful, and insist they check it under warranty - many others have encoountered a similar issue with those dash lights coming on. Find out what the cause is, and then you can choose whether or not to fix it IF its not covered.

Re: Help! Swerve, ABS, VSC Off Lights came on!

Thanks Larry, you have a very valid point. I will try shifting into 4wd at lunch today (at work) and seeing what happens. What was weird, is this morning and yesterday morning, the lights didn't illuminate...but yesterday afternoon they did... I will check at lunch to see if they come on.

If they do, I will take it in.
