So I was looking at my hometown performance shops website and saw this Royal Purple XPR stuff. It is MUCH more expensive than the regular Royal purple and the product description states it is more for racing applications. Has anyone heard of this or used it? Whats the difference? Is it safe for the FJ?
Thanks.

Re: Royal Purple 5w30 vs. Royal Purple XPR 5w30?
I wouldn't think there would be an advantage for us. Actually, there's considerable debate on synthetic being an advantage. I use synthetic, but... Oil is a very big thread/issue with lots of opinions.. Ron

Well, I know there are debates on whether synthetic oil is really good or not. There was a time that a friend of mine's FJ has exactly the same performance mods as me, except he was running Royal Purple. He had A/Ts and I was running street tires..he could outrun me just a little bit. I then changed over to Royal Purple and we were neck and neck again. Also, both running 5w30 "original" Royal Purple.

Usually, oiled blended specifically for racing, do not provide the protections that we the general public need (or at least not in the levels we need). Things like viscosity modifiers, anti-foaming agents, friction modifiers, and whole list of different additives dealing with condensation, sludge, buildup, etc... Most manufacturers of racing oils usually advise against using racing oil in every day drivers. They are really specifically made for that purpose. A NASCAR engine's cold start really isn't all that cold a start and it typically runs 8,500 to 9,200 rpm for 3-4 hours straight and then is drained out when the engine is rebuilt.

look up horsepower tv they did swap with all the fluids on an 4x4 chevy and they gained like 25 hp in just putting royal purple in all the axles and stuff i know i will be using royal purple in my next change

I cant imagine 25 HP from just different fluids, but my mind is made up. As soon as I get out of the cat box I am changing ALL my fluids to RP.
And that info about the racing stuff makes sense. Those vehicles are built to go very fast for a realtively short period of time. Makes sense that it wouldnt work for a daily driver.
Thanks guys.

I've been using different types of synthetic oils & lubes since 1984 when a buddy of mine got a turbo thunderbird. The advantages in cold/hot weather performance have been obvious to me and I've been using them ever since.

Re: Royal Purple 5w30 vs. Royal Purple XPR 5w30?
The question for me is more along the lines of which synthetic. I've used Mobil1 for years and I'm a believer, however it tests very poorly in the old 4.0L jeep engines so I switched to RP. Lots of Jeep folks say that RP (and Amsoil) is smoke and mirrors and you're better off with Mobil1. I really don't know, but I'll probably go back to Mobil1.. Ron
