My engine Knocks at start up

I only have 3000 miles but since it was new it has a bearing knock when first started. Is this inherant to the 4L engine?
This is the first time Ive had a new engine that sounds terrible on cold start.
I also hear vaves that are loud too.It all goes away once it runs a few seconds. It only sounds this way on the first start of the day. Im praying that no one has abused my motor at the dealership.
Do any of you hear this in your motors?

Re: My engine Knocks at start up

Could be an injector.

My engine is VERY loud, even warmed up, and it bothers the hell out of me. Still runs like a champ, though

my motor is silent, aside from the typical emissions equipment tick.

Other than the normal tick, it should not have a knock. Check your oil level, if o.k., change the oil filter (takes 2 minutes), if still there, go listen to a new one, if not there, then go grab the service manager and have him listen.

Re: My engine Knocks at start up

I used to have a 2000 GMC Sierra with a Vortec 5.3 V8. Cold start - even summer - it would knock like a diesel. Those motors were infamous for having knocking noises. GM did s*** about it too, claimed it was a "normal" noise. They also claimed 1 litre of oil every 800km was normal

My FJ used to make the "ticking" noise until I followed the steps suggested in this forum and isolated that emission valve on the driver side of the motor. Now my motor is VERY quiet, cold or hot

Take it in, and have them listen to it. If possible, have them listen to the cold start too, then as others have suggested, try another FJ and compare the difference in noise

X2, If it was mine that's what I would do to make sure. I find it hard to believe that you have a actual bearing knock but maybe you do so don't let any grass grow under your feet before you take it in and have it checked out. Let us know what the dealer finds George.

Re: My engine Knocks at start up

I think what you are hearing is the tick that is normal with these motors. Really is! Do a search, then listen to someone else FJ and know this is probably the normal noisey FJ sound.

Re: My engine Knocks at start up

I just hope my dealer will be honest about it,thats a laugh honesty at a dealer ship...lol I think I hear this when it sits for 2 days and the engine gets dry. Th alves get loud,bt the low bearing knock i what scares m most.I hate to leave it there for days.I have nothing in writing about my warrenty just wha the told me 1 year bumper to bumper 3 years drive train. now im worried they could say I have no warrenty or is this a factory standard.
The millage im not worried aout,I only put like 5000 a year. But since its not in writting can they say I have no warrenty.I think I was screwed on the price too.I didnt know the base price was only 22000 and mine was 32000 and its only got a few extras like roof rack,4 wheel drive no stability control
no gauges on the dash,I have the rock bars but no pan,and i have the brush bar in the front. leather trim on the seats ad ac, I cant beleave those few things brings my truck up 10 grand more.oh and the sound system is cheap too. 2 door speakers 2 dash tweeters and 2 waste of time roof speakers.
I want to put a sun roof in if possible,do you think this can be done with the roof having the iregularities on the surface?
as far as the speaker wres being up there, they can cut them and I would love it.what a waste of time putting those up there.

Hey NJGeorgee, I'm pretty sure the bumper-to-bumper is 3yr/36K, and the drivetrain is 5yr/60K.
