Unichip, Pre-tuned ?

I ordered a Unichip for my FJ MT6, over the weekend. Goodness, gracious !! Them thangs ain't cheap, are they? So I got the one specifically tuned for my Airaid intake and, TRD cat-back. Did I goof that up or what? Anyone have success with that kit? Any advice or comments you care to share? Hope to have recieved the kit, by this weekend(04/12). I can use, all the wisdom, I can get, prior to trying this install, by myself. Thanks in advance!! -Keep FJ'n

Re: Unichip, Pre-tuned ?

you maybe able to use a 'base map' but the term 'pretuned' sounds extremely dangerous. you need to fork out another $500 or so for a custom tune.. don't even try cut corners with tuning or else you'll pay the consequences with your engine. also, you should get more breathing mods before you get the tune.. such as headers..

Re: Unichip, Pre-tuned ?

Yes, you ordered the correct setup. The "pretuning" you speak of is the maps that you get depending on the aftermarket options you have (CAI and Exhaust). As is, your unichip is ready to go by simply following the install instructions and plugging it in. If you really want to get the most out of your chip, you can take it to a Unichip Tuner and have it Custom Tuned. I did this and got 15 more HP over the chip as it came from the factory. I paid just about $600 for the custom tuning. Here is a good thread on the Unichip with some Dyno Charts from my truck. Unichip Computer module

There are lots of other threads about the Unichip if you just use the search function at the top of the page. If you just have a CAI and exhaust, you probably don't need to have the custom tune. If you do other mods like headers and supercharger you will want to get it tuned for sure. Maps from the factory don't take these mods into account.

Thanks Toledo FJ. You have helped. I just wish I understood why a custom tuning has to be soooooooooooo cotton, pickin', expensive($600 dollars is 600 HUNDRED US DOLLARS!! ).
